“Beginning in the early 1980s, former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge and a gang of detectives tortured dozens of innocent African American men, forcing false confessions of crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder. Known as ‘the torture crew,’ Burge and his men intimidated, beat, electrocuted, burned, and genitally mutilated men into falsely confessing crimes for which many spent decades in prison. Yet as case after case continues to be overturned, the City council, Mayor Ram Emanuel, and Richard Daley still refuse to apologize—or even accept responsibility for—these atrocities.”
