Lord Rothschild takes £130m bet against the euro

“The member of the banking dynasty has taken the position through RIT Capital Partners, the £1.9bn investment trust of which he is executive chairman since 1988.  The fact that the former investment banker, a senior member of the Rothschild family, has taken such a view will be seen as a further negative for the currency.  It is not the first time Lord Rothschild has used currency positions as a form of hedge. RIT significantly increased its exposure in sterling after the currency’s decline in 2008, but then scaled back on both the sterling and the euro, anticipating the ensuing recessions in both regions.”

US Army grants $3 million for anti-suicide nasal spray research

“The US Army has awarded a scientist at the Indiana University School of Medicine $3 million to develop a nasal spray that eclipses suicidal thoughts. The research grant comes after the Army lost 38 of its soldiers to suspected suicide in July, setting a record high. So far in 2012, the Army has confirmed 66 active duty suicides and is investigating 50 more, making a total of 116 cases. The Army’s suicide rate is at the highest level in history, with more American soldiers taking their own lives than being killed by the Taliban.”

The coordination in international affairs between China and Africa has been much closer, with the aim of upholding the common interests of developing countries and establishing the new international political and economic order.”

Pakistan mobile networks suspended on security fears

“Pakistan shut down mobile phone networks overnight in major cities to prevent Taliban and Al-Qaeda attacks as celebrations began for the biggest Muslim festival of the year.  The draconian security measure kicked in on Sunday at 8:00 pm (1500 GMT), at a time when millions ordinarily telephone friends and relatives with greetings for Eid al-Fitr. Networks were working again on Monday mid-morning.  Authorities feared that mobile telephones could be used to coordinate attacks or trigger a remote-controlled bomb.”

Valedictorian fights for diploma after using the word ‘hell’ in graduation speech

That was until she went to pick up the real certificate this week.  ‘We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal we have a problem,’ Nootbaar said.  He said the principal told Kaitlin she would have to write an apology letter before he would release the diploma.”

Myanmar says it ends decades of media censorship

“Draconian pre-publication checks – applied in the past to everything from newspapers to song lyrics and even fairy tales – were a hallmark of life under the generals who ran the country for almost half a century until last year.  Political and religious journals were the last to be allowed to go to press without pre-approval from the censors starting from Monday.  One exception is film censorship which remains in place, an information ministry official told AFP. Television journalists for their part ‘self censor’ by asking for instructions about sensitive news, he added.  Reporters jailed under the junta have also been freed from long prison sentences.”
