Fred Reed: The Eye of Sauron

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lewrock2002b752.gif

“What difference will it make to live in a country in which the government knows everything whatever about everybody, and few safeguards against abuse exist? For most people, at first, probably not much. At first. But for people the government doesn’t like, a lot. Reporters, writers, whistle-blowers, activists, dissidents.  And we are all vulnerable. Knowledge, as someone said, is power. Few of us have spotless lives, or want them.
Things have already reached the point at which writers of my acquaintance, who do not have the power of the Washington Post behind them, have stopped criticizing the government.”

In hard times, “I buy gold” is Italy’s boom business

“While pawnshops in northern Europe buy and sell a wide array of used items, the emphasis in Italy is on gold, reflecting a deeply rooted southern European tradition in which gold is the favored gift, starting from baptism.  ‘Since I was a child I remember that gold was given as a gift on various occasions and people used to say: Put it aside,’ said Ivana Ciabatti.  ‘We used to laugh at it, but they turned out to be right. Many families are surviving thanks to this gold.’ Official gold sales to Switzerland leaped 65 percent last year to 120 tonnes, up from 73 tonnes in 2010 and 64 tonnes in 2009.”

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/11772c53-889e-4acb-a1f2-2348a4c7252a-small2.jpg

“One of the nation’s top credit rating agencies said Friday that it expects more municipal bankruptcies and defaults in California, the nation’s largest issuer of municipal bonds. Moody’s Investors Service said in a report that the growing fiscal distress in many California cities was putting bondholders at risk. The service announced that it will undertake a wide-ranging review of municipal finances in the nation’s most populous state because of what it sees as a growing threat of insolvency.”

Greek island authorities denounce attack on tax police

“Local authorities on the Greek island of Hydra have denounced an attack by a local crowd on tax police after they detained a restaurant owner who did not provide receipts to clients and intended to transport the restaurant owner to Athens. They were set upon by a local crowd, which also attacked the boat’s crew.  The police, along with the restaurant owner, had to retreat to the island’s police station, which was besieged until riot police arrived Saturday morning. Locals cut off the station’s electricity and water supplies.”

“Members of the Sioux Nation are attempting to raise $1 million dollars to buy back a section of South Dakota land known in their culture as ‘the Center and heart of everything that is.’  About 2,000 acres of land in the state’s Black Hills is scheduled to go up for auction next week, including what’s known to the Sioux as Pe’ Sla. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has teamed up with the Native American blog Last Real Indians for an online fundraising campaign that began Monday, with an Aug. 23 deadline.”

UN attempts to install another central government in Somalia

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/somaliamarket-afp6.jpg

“Somalia’s newly appointed legislature will elect the country’s next president Monday, in a fresh bid to end two decades of unstable central government, completing a complex process set in motion through a UN-backed agreement aimed at ending eight years of rule by Somalia’s graft-riddled, Western-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG).  With several previous attempts at installing a new central government ending in failure, the international community has done everything to ensure that this latest deadline of August 20 succeeds.”

The View From Pyongyang

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/0816OPEDzutalors-articleLarge-v23.jpg

“With its residents dressed mostly in Western-style clothing and clutching mobile phones, Pyongyang today looks more like a tidy Chinese provincial city than the spartan capital of the world’s last Stalinist state.  On the other hand, the contrast between the relative affluence of the capital and the continuing poverty in the countryside is truly striking.  One wonders at what point a population increasingly connected by mobile phones and exposed to information from China and South Korea will question the regime’s claim to be a ‘Powerful and Prosperous Country.'”

“Moscow’s top court has upheld a ban on gay pride marches in the Russian capital for the next 100 years.  The Moscow city government argues that the gay parade would risk causing public disorder and that most Muscovites do not support such an event.”

Obama’s Drug Czar Is Lying to You About Drug Courts

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/DrugCourtGraph1.jpg

“From a rent seeking point of view, this practice–called ‘cherry picking’–makes perfect sense: Federal drug court funding is contingent on keeping participants clean of alcohol and drugs for at least 12 months, and having a lower recidivism rate for drug court graduates. If you’re a first-time drug offender and you’re not addicted, you’re more likely than a hardcore addict to stay clean for the duration of drug court, and less likely to reoffend (or get caught reoffending) once you’ve graduated. That means you help drug courts keep their numbers up, which helps keep them flush with grants.”
