Former Michigan assistant AG ordered to pay $4.5 million to gay student he stalked, defamed

“A federal court in Detroit has ordered former Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell to pay $4.5 million to the openly gay University of Michigan alumnus whom he likened to Nazis and whose sexuality, he claimed in vitriolic blog posts, was a threat to the college community.  That alumnus, Chris Armstrong, was at the time the first openly gay student body president in the college’s history.”

At the time, failure to do so could have resulted in a $2,000 (£1,273) fine or a 2.5-year prison sentence. The potential punishments are now stronger.  Asked repeatedly whether Mr Romney had indeed profited from the company, had been aware of the potential conflict of interest, or had taken any action to avoid one, his campaign and Bain Capital declined to comment.”

“The Republican Jewish Coalition and similar organizations enjoy tax-exempt status in exchange for promoting social welfare.  Forget super PACs, their much-hyped cousins, which can take unlimited contributions but must name their donors. More money is being spent on TV advertising in the presidential race by social welfare nonprofits, known as 501(c)(4)s for their section of the tax code, than by any other type of independent group.  As of Aug. 8, they had spent more than $71 million on ads mentioning a candidate for president.”

Fang Lizhi, a key figure in the pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989, lived in the US embassy in Beijing with his wife for more than one year before he was allowed to go into exile in the United States in a deal brokered with Japan.”

Hall of Famer Eddie Murray paying $358,151 to settle SEC insider trading charges

“Eye-popping salaries proposed for employees of the health benefits exchange being formed in Colorado grabbed the attention of Republicans and Democrats alike on Thursday. A subcommittee of the board charged with establishing the exchange is considering a draft budget for its federal grant application that would create 24 positions and pay those employees a total of more than $3 million annually to manage the health care cooperative. The average annual salary of a health benefits exchange employee would exceed $125,000 under the plan.”

German army’s crisis role widened

“The German military will in future be able to use its weapons on German streets in an extreme situation, the Federal Constitutional Court says.  The decision to deploy forces must be approved by the federal government.
After World War II the new constitution ruled that soldiers could not be deployed with guns at the ready on German soil.  The court has now changed that, saying troops could be used to tackle an assault that threatens scores of casualties.  The judges had in mind a terrorist incident.”

“As the nation’s ranches and farms endure one of the most severe droughts in decades, the Obama administration has ordered the Pentagon to look into purchasing a ‘second helping’ of all things meat.  The Defense Department is reviewing its purchases of beef, pork and lamb to see if room can be made to buy more now and freeze them for later.  The military already buys approximately 94 million pounds of beef, 64 million pounds of pork, and 500,000 pounds of lamb each year.”
