Don’t laugh – Bitcoin is making a serious point

“On one side of the Bitcoin argument, this internet-based currency has some fervent backers – many of them tech-savvy youngsters.  On the other side stand almost all reputable economists, together with a fierce range of vested interests – including the banks, credit card companies and other conventional players in the extremely lucrative money-transferring business. To them, Bitcoin is a cross between a dangerous irritant and a bad joke. To mention it in conversation is tasteless. To take it seriously is deeply suspect. Yet several events happened last week that made me suspect that Bitcoin – and the idea of ‘stateless’ currencies more generally – will soon catch the zeitgeist.”

Now the taxman is spying on your home using Google Earth

HMRC has spent nearly £1billion over the past three years trying to enforce the rules. Over the past 18 months, it has set up dozens of taskforces to probe the tax receipts and business practices of industries as diverse as restaurants, private cab firms, hairdressers, outdoor markets, car dealerships and even Avon Ladies. It has also spent £50million on the supercomputer, which is called Connect. Created by defence giant BAE Systems three years ago, it now holds more than a billion pieces of information about any taxpayers it suspects.  It includes tax payment records, interest on bank accounts, details of any properties owned, loans, job history and electoral records.”

Cancer Researchers Are On The Verge Of Human Trials With Cannabis

“Dr. Sean McAllister, of the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), has spent nearly a decade studying the effects of cannabidiol – a chemical found in marijuana – on aggressive types of breast and brain cancer.  His research has already shown that cannabidiol (CBD) can reduce the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Although, so far, he’s only been able to study animal and cell culture models. Now he says his team is ready to prove it in humans. Since last year, Dr. McAllister has been going through the difficult and lengthy process of initiating clinical trials. With study designs complete, funding seems to be the only obstacle that remains.”

A fully 3D Printed Metal 1911 Pistol

“It was bound to eventually happen, but I did not think it would be so soon. The company Solid Concepts has printed an entire 1911 pistol with a 3D laser metal sintering printer. What is more, the company has an FFL Manufacturing license and can print guns on behalf of customers with a five day turnaround. You provide them with a suitable CAD model and they will print it for you. This video shows their all-printed 1911 being fired …  What is even more amazing is that they printed the barrel, including the rifling grooves. There was no machining whatsoever involved in the manufacturing of this gun.”

Mass Exodus from U.S. Bonds

“Although the outflows in the last two months haven’t been quite as heavy, the fact that they’ve continued for five straight months is unprecedented.  And as Mike reported in his Money and Markets column yesterday, in just these five months alone, we’ve now seen outflows totaling more than $128 billion!  For mutual fund watchers, the most striking consequence is that Bill Gross’s Pimco Total Return Fund has shrunk by a whopping $37.5 billion since January, losing its top spot among the largest mutual funds in the world.  But for us, it means a lot more than that: It means that a major trend shift is now under way … and the shift is about to hit the fan.”

‘Without third party bitcoin is safer than Fed notes’

“WM: What we see in the world today with the libor crisis, and Greece, and the failure in Cyprus is regulation does not work. You have regulatory capture, you just have system failure. And the thing that makes bitcoin exciting for people that believe in bitcoin is the fact that it is an emergent system. If it does require regulation to survive then it really wasn’t as good as we thought it was. These sorts of things do happen. You can call this a bank. I would say this is a hosted service run by an 18-year-old. It is not a bank. The people who trusted the third party were really giving away the strength of bitcoin which does not require a third party.”

First Bitcoin ATM gets 348 transactions in first 8 days. Now, the hard part

“According to the ATM maker, Robocoin, the machines did over $100,000 worth of business and racked up 348 transactions in its first eight days. CEO Jordan Kelley added that 70 percent of the ATM users created Bitcoin wallets — suggesting they were first-time users. ‘We had a fantastic mix of new and old Bitcoin users,’ said Kelley, adding that the ATM visitors included Bitcoin miners and an 80-year-old woman. Kelley claimed that the Robocoin machines, which cost about $15,000 each, will soon appear in other cities by the end of December, including Berlin, Toronto, Hong Kong, London and New York.”

SecondMarket’s Bitcoin Investment Trust puts bitcoin in IRAs

“Forget stocks and bonds. You can now save for retirement by investing in bitcoin.  The Bitcoin Investment Trust currently has about $15 million in assets under management. ‘We were aiming for $10 million by the end of the year. We got to $15 million in four weeks,’ said Silbert.  Interest in the Bitcoin Investment Trust is coming from technology entrepreneurs, family offices and people on Wall Street. Some family offices are beginning to put a portion of their gold allocation into bitcoin, Silbert said. The Wall Street category includes fund managers and traders ‘who are investing personally, which we think is a precursor to institutional money coming in,’ he added.”

Bitcoin Revolution Spreads to Togo

“It was a good opportunity to explain about BitCoin and they were amazed and some of them even wrote down the website of localbitcoins.  Pucture fixed and we headed to Lomé and found a place at the beach. We stayed a few days to service the bikes and some administration. We also visit the Fetish Market, only white magic is what they say and visited the waterfalls in Kpalimé, all very nice experience.  During our stay, we luckily found a person interested in buying bitcoins and it was a pleasant transaction, just a few delays due the Internet, (we had dinner while the trade was done) in Africa you need to be very patient.  So this is it, we just arrived in Cotonou and more stories will follow.”
