WaPo: Marijuana’s rising acceptance comes after many failures

“Since the 1960s, the United States has traveled on a herky-jerky trip from hippies and head shops to grass-roots backlash by suburban parents, from enthusiastic funding of the war on drugs to a gathering consensus that the war had little effect on marijuana use. Why is the current campaign for legalization resonating when previous ones did not?  Today’s leap toward legality is entwined with the financial desperation of cash-strapped states, an Internet-driven revolution in how Americans learn about marijuana and its medicinal uses, and a rising libertarian sensibility in which many liberals and conservatives alike have grown skeptical of government’s role in telling citizens how to medicate themselves.”

Government Delays Cause Cannabis Shortage in Seattle

“Although there are 635,000 residents in Washington’s biggest city, the state only allowed for one retail marijuana space to open in Seattle and now it’s completely out of pot. Cannabis City, ran by owner James Lathrop, is the lone dispensary that was licensed in Seattle and ready to begin selling marijuana on the first day it was legal in the state. Between the opening date on July 8 and Thursday July 10, the dispensary sold out of its entire stock of 11 pounds or 4,990 grams of marijuana despite its 2-grams-per-person policy. Reports reveal that the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) licensed less than 80 growers within the entire state despite receiving over 2,500 applications.”

Alzheimer’s Caused By Loss of Cannabinoid Pathways, Study Shows

“Early deficits in Alzheimer’s may be caused by blockage of the brain’s cannabinoids, according to new research out of Stanford University.  This interference with the brain’s cannabinoids may be the mechanism by which early memory deficits in Alzheimer’s are formed.  A 2013 study by researchers from Neuroscience Research Australia suggests an ingredient in marijuana called CBD could be beneficial. The team found that treatment with CBD led to drastic improvements in memory in mice genetically engineered to mimic Alzheimer’s disease. Besides the potential to combat Alzheimer’s symptoms, some studies suggest cannabinoids also hold promise in slowing progression of the disorder.”

New Mom Charged With Drug ‘Assault’ on Fetus

“A Tennessee woman is the first to be charged under a new state law that specifically makes it a crime to take drugs while pregnant, calling it ‘assault.’  The law, which just went into effect, allows a woman to be “prosecuted for assault for the illegal use of a narcotic drug while pregnant” if her infant is harmed or addicted to the drug.  Monroe County Sheriff Bill Bivens said he hoped the arrest would deter other pregnant women from drug use.  ‘Hopefully it will send a signal to other women who are pregnant and have a drug problem to seek help. That’s what we want them to do,’ he said. Critics say that the law will hinder drug-addicted pregnant women from getting help and treatment.”

And now: The criminalization of parenthood

“A couple of themes we explore here at The Watch are the increasing criminalization of just about everything and the use of the criminal justice system to address problems that were once (and better) handled by families, friends, communities and other institutions. A few examples from recent headlines show those themes intersecting with parenthood. The first story comes from South Carolina, where a mother was jailed and charged with ‘unlawful conduct toward a child’ for . . . leaving her 9-year-old daughter alone to play in a park.”

Son Skips Church, Father Arrested for Child Endangerment

“What started out as a normal Sunday morning for Jeffrey Williamson of Blanchester, Ohio, turned into a nightmare when police officers showed up to his front door and arrested him in front of his family. His crime? Child endangerment—as the authorities described it—because his son skipped church to go play with friends. He now faces up to six months in jail.  To make matters worse, as a result of local news coverage of the event, Williamson was fired from his job and remained unemployed for a period of time.  The haste by the police to arrest Williamson instead of inquiring further about the situation led to him his ability to financially provide for those same children.”

U.S. Welfare Spending: 4 Times the Amount Necessary to End Poverty

“The US Census Bureau ‘estimates that our current welfare spending totals four times what would be necessary just to give all the poor the cash to bring them up to the poverty line, eliminating all poverty in America.’ Yes—we spend four times the necessary amount to bring all of the poor in America up to the poverty line.  Clearly we are doing something wrong.  The war on poverty began back in 1965 under LBJ. Since then, our federal and state governments have spent more than twice the cost of all the American conflicts since the American Revolution.  Perhaps it is time to reconsider simpler approaches to fighting poverty.”

Fed’s Zero Interest Rate Cost Savers A Trillion Dollars

“While there is a lot of support for low interest rates – from stock market investors, home buyers, business borrowers, etc. – it has not been a cost-free policy.  While bank savings rates have traditionally been able to earn savers a little more than inflation, they have consistently lagged behind inflation during this era of extraordinarily low interest rates. That means that depositors in CDs, savings accounts and money market accounts have been losing purchasing power. This lost purchasing power is the hidden cost of the Fed’s policies.  The question is, what has this three-quarters of a trillion dollars in lost purchasing power bought us?”

In Europe, Job Protections for Older Generation Are Barriers for Youth

“The older generation benefited from decades of rock-solid job protection, union-guaranteed salary increases and the promise of a comfortable retirement. All this has allowed them to weather Europe’s longest postwar crisis reasonably well.  By contrast, many younger Europeans can hope for little more than poorly paid, short-term contracts. Employers in many countries are reluctant to hire on permanent contracts because of rigid labor rules and sky-high payroll taxes that go to funding the huge pension bill of their parents. The breach is widening: Median income for people over 60 rose between 2008 and 2012 in nearly every EU country; it declined for people under 25 in almost half.”

Lawrence Reed of FEE on the Expansion of Free-Market Thinking

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“We can’t just make the case for capitalism based on the fact, as indisputable as it is, that capitalism produces more stuff. Even if you convince someone of that, they are vulnerable to the first charlatan who comes along and says it’s not fair, that if we only empower politicians and bureaucracies we can improve things. The case for liberty must ultimately rest upon a deep and abiding moral dimension. It’s right because it’s what humans were made for. We’re not a fleet of homogenous robots that function best when somebody programs us. We’re at our best when we’re free to be ourselves, to be responsible for our decisions without the power to impose our mistakes at gunpoint.”
