Ex-IMF head Strauss-Kahn denounces treatment in U.S. rape case

“Disgraced ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn said the legal principle of being innocent until proven guilty was violated in the sex scandal that brought him down. Strauss-Kahn told CNN he was still angry with the US justice system over his treatment in 2011 when he was paraded before TV cameras in New York in handcuffs, on charges of rape that were later dropped. ‘The problem is that it’s a moment where in all European, American society you are supposed to be innocent, you are supposed to be innocent until you are convicted,’ he said.”

Pentagon puts 650,000 workers on unpaid leave due to cuts

“Heavy US government spending cuts took a sharp swing as the Pentagon began putting about 650,000 civilian workers on unpaid leave. The Department of Defense’s civilian employees face furloughs of up to 11 days through the end of the fiscal year on September 30. The pay pinch was expected to have the most immediate impact in areas with a large military presence, such as greater Washington DC, California and Texas.  The International Monetary Fund last month assailed the sharp spending cuts as ‘excessively rapid and ill-designed.'”

US’s Man ElBaradei May Head Egypt

“So perhaps it will be ElBaradei after all … He’s been waiting in the wings and the failure of the Muslim Brotherhood‘s regime may now bring him to the fore.  It also became clear to us over time that the West’s surreptitious efforts in the Middle East were emplacing Islamic regimes. This became evident and obvious in Tunisia, The Ivory Coast, Libya, etc.  But for whatever reason, Mohammed Mursi didn’t work out. Now perhaps a technocrat will enter. ElBaradei is in favor of installing a US$5 billion IMF package, with its attendant austerity, according to this Reuters article.  Was this the reason for Mursi’s ouster? His lack of cooperation with the IMF?”

Senator Patrick Leahy: ‘Our law is clear,’ U.S. must cut off aid to Egypt

“‘Our law is clear: U.S. aid is cut off when a democratically elected government is deposed by military coup or decree,’ Leahy added. ‘As we work on the new budget, my committee also will review future aid to the Egyptian government as we wait for a clearer picture. As the world’s oldest democracy, this is a time to reaffirm our commitment to the principle that transfers of power should be by the ballot, not by force of arms.’ He cited the Fiscal Year 2012 State Department And Foreign Operations Appropriations Act, which prohibits the U.S. from sending funds to the government of a country whose democratically-elected leader has been deposed by the military.”

Military air tankers join fight against deadly Arizona wildfire

“The US military ordered four air tankers to join fire-dousing efforts in Arizona, where firefighters were battling a still out-of-control inferno which killed 19 of their comrades. The Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) planes will be redeployed from other states to help tackle blazes including the Yarnell Hill fire, which remained zero percent contained despite a doubling of ground crews fighting it.  The extra firefighting aircraft, which are specially-equipped military C-130 planes, can drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds, and can be refilled in less than 12 minutes.”
