Ain’t that Amerika?

“A paramilitary team operated by North Carolina’s Wilson County Sheriff’s Office recently executed what was described as a ‘high risk search warrant’ on a narcotics suspect. The members of the ‘Emergency Response Team,’ clad in black armor, bucket helmets, and balaclavas, found what ‘nearly a pound of marijuana’ – which could be the yield from a single healthy plant – and a single handgun.  A photograph taken by an embedded correspondent for the Wilson Times newspaper showed two of the masked SWAT operators in full military regalia. One of them bore, ‘mid snow and ice, a tactical shield inscribed with a strange device – ‘Defender.'”

The DEA Manual: The Terrifying Way Law Enforcement is Lying to Us

“A secretive unit within the DEA known as the ‘Special Operations Division’ (SOD) specializes in gathering information on defendants through cavalier means (including data-sharing with the NSA), and then helps investigators recreate information trails so evidence appears to have come from ‘normal investigative techniques.’  The new documents reveal ‘DEA trainers routinely teach the finer points of parallel construction to field agents and analysts across the country, not just within the SOD’.  In addition to concerns over constitutionality, the documents urge local law enforcement to hide their surveillance methods because ‘Americans don’t like [them.]’.”

McGruff, The Crime Dog, Sentenced To 16 Years For Pot, Weapons

“The man who played the famous ‘Take a bite out of crime’ dog was arrested in 2011 after Galveston police and drug-sniffing dogs pulled over the McGruff actor for speeding, the Houston Chronicle reports. Authorities found diagrams of two indoor pot-growing operations sitting on the front seat, and multiple pot seeds stored in the trunk of his Infinity.  Police raided Morales’ home and found the multitude of marijuana plants, ammunition and weapons, which included a grenade launcher.  Morales insisted that he was nonviolent, but U.S. District Judge Vanessa Gilmore stated that, ‘Everything I read about you makes you seem like a scary person.'”

Lawsuit claims Chicago Police strip-searched trio in public

“Officers opened both men’s waistbands and searched down their pants. The suit alleges police then walked Douglas to a nearby house, handcuffed his wrist to bars on the home’s window, and pulled his pants to the ground while bending him over and searching his buttocks in the open air, then took all of them to an alley behind a church in the 9100 block of South Bishop Street, where they ordered Halley to remove her pants. Halley claims she ‘pleaded’ with a female officer not to, but that the officers made her remove her tampon and submit to a body cavity search in the alley.  A female officer searched her, while a group of male officers watched.”

Liberty: A Muslim-American Perspective

“It is true that we don’t really appreciate and truly understand what we have until we lose it and liberty for me started its slow but steady descent into oblivion on Sept. 11 2001, a day that went down in infamy not just for America but for the entire world. In the days and weeks following, it became apparent to me that nothing would stay the same and slowly but surely and all in the name of ‘security’ and ‘freedom’ the days and years following the horrid events of Sept.11 paved the way for a barrage of infringements on my rights as a human being and as a citizen.”

Jury Nullifies Charge Against Pot Grower Who Shot and Killed a Cop

“This week a Texas grand jury declined to indict a marijuana grower for shooting and killing a sheriff’s deputy who burst into his home in the early morning to execute a search warrant. Henry Goedrich Magee, who was indicted on drug and weapon charges (the latter only because he was growing marijuana), said he believed Burleson County Sgt. Adam Sowders was a burglar. ‘This was a terrible tragedy that a deputy sheriff was killed, but Hank Magee believed that he and his pregnant girlfriend were being robbed,’ Magee’s lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, told A.P. ‘He did what a lot of people would have done. He defended himself and his girlfriend and his home.'”

It’s Getting Harder For The Feds To Lie About Marijuana

“Publicly lying about pot isn’t as easy as it used to be.  That’s the lesson White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (aka the Drug Czar’s office) Deputy Director Michael Botticelli learned earlier this week when he testified before U.S. House Subcommittee on Government Relations. Armed with what appeared to be crib notes from the days of Reefer Madness, Botticelli’s spurious anti-pot testimony immediately became the subject of Internet video fodder and mainstream mediacriticism. Even more tellingly, Botticelli’s comments drew stern rebukes from federal lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.”

Shunned by banks, legal weed retailers are turning to Bitcoin

“In the midst of a wave of marijuana legalization across the United States, you can finally use bitcoin to legally buy weed.  Kouchlock Productions, a medical marijuana dispensary in Spokane, Wash., that opened earlier this week, is already selling the drug using bitcoins, reports Coindesk.  Medical marijuana has been legal in Washington since 1998, but buyers have been limited primarily to cash purchases due to credit card companies and banks reluctance to process payments for drugs that are still illegal under federal law. That’s where Bitcoin, which suffers little or no legal oversight, shines.”

The drug revolution that no one can stop

“Technology and drugs have always existed in an easy symbiosis: the first thing ever bought and sold across the Internet was a bag of marijuana. In 1971 or 1972, students at Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory used ARPANET—the earliest iteration of the Internet—to arrange a marijuana deal with their counterparts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  That groundbreaking deal connected two teams of people who were separated by a 45-hour drive east-west across the entire continent. Today, buying drugs online is far easier and faster—and in many cases, you don’t even have to break the law.”

Washington, Colorado have few ways to stop carry-on weed

“Among the many oddities that have arisen from marijuana legalization in Washington and Colorado is this: It can be easier to get through airport security with a bag of weed than a bottle of water.  At Washington’s airports, including Seattle-Tacoma International, there’s nothing police can do to prevent travelers from flying with pot in their carry-on or checked luggage, provided it doesn’t exceed the state legal limit of one ounce. Instead, airport officials say, officers simply recommend that travelers leave it in their cars, toss it or have a friend pick it up.”
