Merkel faces outright rebellion within her own party over refugee crisis

Angela Merkel is facing an outright rebellion within her own party after two of her most senior ministers directly challenged her ‘open-door’ refugee policy.  The German chancellor’s office was forced to intervene at the weekend to block an unauthorised attempt by Thomas de Maiziere, the interior minister, to change the asylum rules for Syrian refugees.  But Wolfgang Schäuble, the influential finance minister, has since come out in support of Mr de Maiziere’s initiative, alongside a host of senior party figures. The challenge from the two most senior ministers from her own party has left Mrs Merkel increasingly reliant on her coalition partner, the Social Democrats (SPD).”

German politician stabbed, allegedly over support for refugees

“A mayoral candidate who was stabbed Saturday in Cologne, Germany — allegedly for supporting the resettlement of refugees in the city — won the election Sunday amid rising tensions over refugee policies in Germany, which will welcome up to 1.5 million people this year.  Henriette Reker won with 53 percent of the vote as she was recovering from the attack, which took place at a campaign event. A 44-year-old man and former member of a now-banned neo-Nazi organization stabbed her in the neck, saying, ‘It’s wrong what’s happening here. I’m freeing you from such follies.’ He also expressed fears that ‘foreigners would take jobs’ and that Sharia would be imposed in the country.”

France Pays Price for Front-Line Role From Syria to West Africa

“France was the first European country to join the U.S. air strikes on Islamic State in Iraq last year and is the only European country to join the U.S. in air strikes in Syria.  France sent troops to Mali in January 2013 to prevent the country falling to an al-Qaeda affiliate based in the Sahel. That intervention has now been transformed into a mission covering Niger and Chad to prevent Islamic militants based in southern Libya from destabilizing the area. This isn’t the first time France’s involvement abroad has led to terrorism at home. In 1995, Algerian Islamists set off eight bombing attacks in Paris to punish France for supporting the government in that country’s civil war.”

Hollande Orders French Borders Closed; Paris Under Mandatory Curfew

“French President Francois Hollande said a state of emergency would be declared across France and national borders shut following a spate of attacks in Paris on Friday evening in which he said dozens were killed and several wounded.   Shortly after the speech, Hollande’s office announced that he was canceling his participation at the G20 meeting in Turkey this weekend.  A mandatory curfew was instituted in Paris, the first since 1944, according to the Associated Press.  Shortly after midnight Paris time, a French government official said the country’s state of emergency had gone into effect.”

Hollande’s approval rating slumps again [Oct. 2015]

“The poll found just 20 percent of respondents were satisfied with Hollande’s performance, down from 23 percent in September and a sizable fall from 29 percent in January, when the president was widely praised for his response to the Islamist attacks in Paris.  A poll last week for the web site Atlantico found that Hollande’s Socialist Party would trail in third in regional elections to be held in December behind Nicolas Sarkozy’s Les Républicains and Marine Le Pen’s National Front.  Hollande has been in Iceland, where he visited a glacier to see the effects of global warming ahead of climate change talks in Paris later this year.”

$21 million later, London police stop waiting out Assange at embassy

After spending millions to station officers for over 1,200 days on the off-chance that Julian Assange would step out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, the Metropolitan Police Service announced Monday that it would remove its constant overt presence outside the building.  Assange has remained inside the embassy for over three years. Should he leave and be arrested, he would be extradited to Sweden and possibly onto the United States where he is likely being investigated (PDF) for possible crimes related to WikiLeaks.  For now, Assange has not been formally charged with a crime in Sweden.”

He Volunteered to Go to Auschwitz

“Are you wondering why you’ve never heard of this man before?  For decades, information about Pilecki was kept hidden by the leaders of the postwar, Soviet-installed regime. They couldn’t recount his anti-Nazi activities without completing the story and telling of his anticommunist work as well. With the release in recent years of previously classified or suppressed documents, including Pilecki’s own reports in their entirety, his superhuman exploits are finally becoming known around the world.”

UK surveillance “worse than 1984,” says new UN privacy chief

“The mandate of the new post of UN special rapporteur on privacy is broad. Cannataci, who is a professor of law at the University of Malta, and uses neither Facebook nor Twitter, is empowered to review government policies on digital surveillance and the collection of personal data, and to identify activities that harm privacy protection without any compelling justification. He can also give his views on how the private sector should be addressing its human rights responsibilities. His four main tasks: drawing up a universal law on surveillance; tackling the business models of the big Internet companies; defining what ‘privacy’ exactly entails; and raising awareness of these issues among the public.”

Google ordered to remove links to stories about Google removing links to stories

“The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has ordered Google to remove links from its search results that point to news stories reporting on earlier removals of links from its search results. The nine further results that must be removed point to Web pages with details about the links relating to a criminal offence that were removed by Google following a request from the individual concerned. The Web pages involved in the latest ICO order repeated details of the original criminal offence, which were then included in the results displayed when searching for the complainant’s name on Google. Understandably, Google is not very happy about this escalation of the EU’s so-called ‘right to be forgotten’.”

Liberland: utopian tax-free micronation or state of mind?

“Tucked away on the banks of the Danube is the tiny, would-be country of Liberland. The former Czech politician who declared himself its founder and president says it is a legitimate and viable state and is pushing for international recognition. But Vit Jedlicka is facing tough opposition fromSerbia and Croatia, who have been in dispute over the territory since the break-up of the former Yugoslavia.  Undeterred, Jedlicka has been issuing Liberland passports and appointing ambassadors in his quest to carve out a new nation in the Balkans. He has even set up a national airline.”
