Key role of Yahoo, Microsoft and Google in NSA data collection revealed

“The key role US telecoms and internet companies play in NSA surveillance programs is detailed in a top-secret document provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden.  In the five weeks from June 5 2010, data from Yahoo generated by far the most reports, followed by Microsoft and then Google.  Between them, the three companies accounted for more than 2,000 reports in that period – all but a tiny fraction of the total.  While the internet companies are listed by name in the NSA document, the telecoms companies are hidden behind covernames.  The names of these ‘corporate partners’ are so sensitive that they are classified as ‘ECI’ – Exceptionally Controlled Information.”

In Fed and Out, Many Now Think Inflation Helps

“Some economists say more inflation is just what the American economy needs to escape from a half-decade of sluggish growth and high unemployment.  Economists, including Janet Yellen, President Obama’s nominee to lead the Fed starting next year, have long argued that a little inflation is particularly valuable when the economy is weak. The school board in Anchorage, Alaska, for example, is counting on inflation to keep a lid on teachers’ wages. Retailers including Costco and Walmart are hoping for higher inflation to increase profits. The federal government expects inflation to ease the burden of its debts. Yet by one measure, inflation rose at an annual pace of 1.2 percent in August.”

Challenging the 911 Landlord Law

“‘911 Landlord Laws’ are also known as ‘nuisance’ or ‘crime-free housing‘ ordinances. The ordinances vary from city to city, but certain elements are common: to keep their rental licenses, landlords are encouraged or required to perform criminal background checks on rental applicants; they are encouraged or required to use a ‘crime-free lease,’ by which any crime on the premises breaks the contract — even if the tenant was a victim and did nothing more than call the police; furthermore, the police can demand eviction of a ‘nuisance’ tenant, and landlords who do not comply can be repeatedly fined or worse. In some cities, landlords can also be forced to pay the cost of police visits.”

Insurance Executives Meet With Obama Staff on Fixing Health Exchange

“The heads of WellPoint Inc. (WLP), Aetna Inc. and at least 10 other insurers met with the Obama administration to discuss correcting flaws in how data from the U.S. health-care marketplaces is transferred to the companies. ‘Alpha teams’ of technology workers at the insurance companies and in the government ‘are working side-by-side to correct challenges,’ the White House said today in a statement. The administration didn’t provide additional details about the meeting, which included Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.”

The Markets Are Rigged! How to Opt Out and Still Profit

“Call me nostalgic, but I remember a time when a bad jobs outlook sent the large-cap companies down, not up. The economy is weak, so a company’s profit expectations suffer. The logic makes sense. Today, however, we live in the topsy-turvy world of government-manipulated markets, where such asinine statements make complete sense… until they don’t. The problem with a market that lives at the teat of Washington’s policies is that it can be reversed in mere moments. One election. One popular news story. One social media outcry. One back-channel policy. One bloody coup d’état. That’s all it takes.”

Big Win for Defense Industry: Obama Rolls Back Limits on Arms Exports

“Under the new system, whole categories of equipment encompassing tens of thousands of items will move to the Commerce Department, where they will be under more “flexible” controls. Some military equipment, such as fighter jets, drones, and other systems and parts, will stay under the State Department’s tighter oversight. The switch from State to Commerce represents a big win for defense manufacturers, who have long lobbied in favor of relaxing U.S. export rules.  Among the companies that recently lobbied on the issue: Lockheed, which manufactures C-130 transport planes, Textron, which makes Kiowa Warrior helicopters, and Honeywell, which outfits military choppers.”

Fleecing the Taxpayer in the Age of Petty Tyrannies

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“As I point out in my book, A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, the overt signs of the despotism exercised by the increasingly authoritarian regime that passes itself off as the United States government are all around us.  Yet as egregious as these incursions on our rights may be, it’s the endless, petty tyrannies inflicted on an overtaxed, overregulated, and underrepresented populace that occasionally nudge a weary public out of their numb indifference and into a state of outrage:  requiring permission to grow exotic orchids, host elaborate dinner parties, gather friends in one’s home for Bible studies, give coffee to the homeless, or keep chickens as pets.”

Traffic Camera Company Uses False Threats To Extract Ticket Payment

“American Traffic Solutions (ATS) is threatening Texas vehicle owners with drivers’ license suspensions if they fail to pay up when a red light camera ticket is sent in the mail. Under state law, the company cannot make good on its threat. A red light camera ticket fine is $75, or $100 if not paid within thirty days. To encourage payment, ATS includes a brochure with the citation that purports to describe additional consequences of not sending in a check immediately. The notice, sent to a vehicle owner for a citation received in the city of Burleson, does not accurately describe the consequence of nonpayment under state law.”

Computer Glitch Blamed For Nationwide Food Stamp System Shutdown

“People in Ohio, Michigan and 15 other states found themselves unable to use their food stamp debit-style cards on Saturday, after a routine test of backup systems by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure. At about 9 a.m. Saturday, reports from across the country began pouring in that customers’ EBT cards were not working in stores.  At 2 p.m., an EBT customer service representative told CBS Boston that the system was currently down for a computer system upgrade. U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Courtney Rowe said the outage is not related to the government shutdown.”
