Obamacare’s broken website cost more than LinkedIn, Spotify combined

“The site is so busted that, as of a couple days ago, the number of people that successfully purchased healthcare through it was in the ‘single digits,’ according to the Washington Post.  The reason for this nationwide headache apparently stems from poorly written code, which buckled under the heavy influx of traffic that its engineers and administrators should have seen coming. But the fact that Healthcare.gov can’t do the one job it was built to do isn’t the most infuriating part of this debacle – it’s that we, the taxpayers, seem to have forked up more than $500 million of the federal purse to build the digital equivalent of a rock.”

America’s Schools Transform Into Authoritarian Instruments of Compliance

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“We are witnessing a paradigm shift in American society, in which no personal activity is safe from the prying eyes of government agents and their corporate allies. Every decision and action, no matter how innocent, is scrutinized, analyzed, filed, stored, and eventually held against you when those in power feel like it. Pulling back the veil of zero tolerance, the real culprit is the corporate-state, which has been meticulously applying the zero tolerance mindset to not just public schools in America, but our workplaces, our political forums, our social interactions and even our own homes. The end result is a society which is completely pacified and willing to march in lockstep with the corporate-state.”

Nissan To Britain: Stay In The European Union

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“British banking elites have obviously been burning up the phone wires to Tokyo and probably other industrial capitals, as well. The idea is to twist arms of major corporations until they explain to the jobless British public that their continued presence in the EU is necessary if they want to work at all.  Britain, like the rest of Europe, is suffering from a terrible economy. The combination of reckless money-printing and the determination of banking elites not to let a single, bloated financial firm go out of business has virtually paralyzed the British economy, as it has paralyzed much of Europe.”

Americans Suffering Sticker Shock: Is Obamacare Really Affordable?

“It’s Day 8 of the Federal Government shutdown and many citizens who are able to sign up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act are shocked how to see how expensive the plans are for working middle class families.  Workers who were dropped by their employer’s health insurance are being told to sign-up for Obamacare. However, they are discovering that it is certainly not that easy. Workers are finding a buggy and complicated system where their premiums are outrageous and that they are too wealthy for the tax deductions promised under ACA.”

Bill Bonner: How to Survive the Coming Zombie Apocalypse, Part 1

Bill-Bonner2

“The defining characteristic of a zombified system is the way it hands out its rewards. In an honest economy people do their best. They work hard. They take their chances. Some prevail because they are productive. Others are just lucky. The chips fall where they may. But as zombies take over the system, the chips fall where they are told to fall. Rather than to honest and efficient producers, the rewards go to those who curry favors. Elizabeth Fowler knows how it works. She labored at the left hand of senator Max Baucus, drafting the collection of crimes and punishments that came to be known as ‘Obamacare.'”

EasyDNS Founder: Whatever Happened to “Due Process”?

“What gets me about all of this is that the largest, most egregious perpetrators of online criminal activity right now are our own governments, spying on their own citizens, illegally wiretapping our own private communications and nobody cares, nobody will answer for it, it’s just an out-of-scope conversation that is expected to blend into the overall background malaise of our ever increasing serfdom.  If I can’t make various governments and law enforcement agencies get warrants or court orders before they crack my private communications then I can at least  require a court order before I takedown my own customer.”

Pentagon Spent $5 Billion on Weapons on the Eve of the Shutdown

“The Pentagon pumped billions of dollars into contractors’ bank accounts on the eve of the U.S. government’s shutdown that saw 400,000 Defense Department employees furloughed.  All told, the Pentagon awarded 94 contracts yesterday evening on its annual end-of-the-fiscal-year spending spree, spending more than five billion dollars on everything from robot submarines to Finnish hand grenades and a radar base mounted on an offshore oil platform. To put things in perspective, the Pentagon gave out only 14 contracts on September 3, the first workday of the month.  Here are some of the more interesting purchases from Monday’s dollar-dump.”

As Congress fights over budget, federal agencies go on shopping sprees

“This past week, the Department of Veterans Affairs bought $562,000 worth of artwork.  In a single day, the Agriculture Department spent $144,000 on toner cartridges.  And, in a single purchase, the Coast Guard spent $178,000 on ‘Cubicle Furniture Rehab.’  Private contractors — worried that sequestration would result in a smaller spending rush this year — brought in food to keep salespeople at their desks. Federal workers quizzed harried colleagues in the hallways, asking if they had spent it all yet.  Three years’ worth of staples. Portable generators that never got used. One said the National Guard bought so much ammunition that firing it all became a chore.”

The Police State Programs Not Affected by a Government Shutdown

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“While a government shutdown will inevitably impact everything from Head Start, and key welfare services to national museums and IRS audits, the one area not impacted in the least will be the police/surveillance state and its various militarized agencies, spying programs and personnel. Take a look at the programs and policies that will not be affected by a government shutdown, and you’ll get a clearer sense of the government’s priorities—priorities which have little to do with serving taxpayers and everything to do with maintaining power and control, while being sold to the public under the guise of national security.”

DOJ vs. Weev: He’s A Felon Because He Broke The Rules We Made Up

techdirt1

“The feds pushed criminal charges against him under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) for discovering a massive (and ridiculous) security hole in the way AT&T set up the iPad. The feds seemed to argue that this was some nefarious evil hack, and Auernheimer was sentenced to 41 months in prison and has to pay $73,000 to AT&T (roughly the cost it took AT&T to inform its customers of its own bone-headed lack of security). Nearly its entire argument against Auernheimer is that he ‘didn’t play by the rules’ where ‘the rules’ it’s talking about aren’t actual rules at all, but rather what the DOJ makes up in the minds of some clearly technologically-illiterate lawyers.”
