Andrew Napolitano: Domestic Spying Is Dangerous to Freedom

“How is it that the government can charge Edward Snowden with espionage for telling a journalist that the feds have been spying on all Americans and many of our allies, but the NSA itself can reveal secrets and do so with impunity? All of this happened in the dark, with the permission of President Obama, with the knowledge and consent of fewer than 20 members of Congress who were forbidden from doing anything about it by the laws they themselves had written, and based on secret legal arguments accepted by a secret court that keeps its records secret even from the judges who sit on the court.”

7 surveillance reforms Obama supported before he became president

“As a senator, Obama wanted 1. to limit bulk records collection;  2. to require government analysts to get court approval before accessing incidentally collected American data.  3. the executive branch to report to Congress how many American communications had been swept up during surveillance;  4. to restrict the use of gag orders related to surveillance court orders;  5. to give the accused a chance to challenge government surveillance; 6. the attorney general to submit a public report giving aggregate data about how many people had been targeted for searches;  7.  the government to declassify significant surveillance court opinions.”

Army won’t suspend contracts with Al Qaeda-tied companies, citing ‘due process rights’

“The U.S. Army is refusing to suspend contracts with dozens of companies and individuals tied to Al Qaeda and other extremist groups out of concern for their ‘due process rights,’ despite repeated pleas from the chief watchdog for Afghanistan reconstruction.  In a scathing passage of his latest report to Congress, Special Inspector General John Sopko said his office has urged the Army to suspend or debar 43 contractors over concerns about ties to the Afghanistan insurgency, ‘including supporters of the Taliban, the Haqqani network and al Qaeda.’ Sopko wrote that the Army ‘rejected’ every single case.”

Obama’s abuse of the Espionage Act is modern-day McCarthyism

“President Obama has been unprecedented in his use of the Espionage Act to prosecute those whose whistleblowing he wants to curtail. The purpose of an Espionage Act prosecution, however, is not to punish a person for spying for the enemy, selling secrets for personal gain, or trying to undermine our way of life. It is to ruin the whistleblower personally, professionally and financially. It is meant to send a message to anybody else considering speaking truth to power: challenge us and we will destroy you. Only ten people in American history have been charged with espionage for leaking classified information, seven of them under Barack Obama.”

Obama: Persecution of LGBT people violates basic morality

“President Barack Obama on Tuesday night condemned Russia and some African countries for persecuting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals. ‘I’ve been very clear that when it comes to universal rights, when it comes to people’s basic freedoms, that whether you are discriminating on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, you are violating the basic morality that I think should transcend every country,’ he said on NBC’s The Tonight Show with host Jay Leno. ‘And I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them.'”

Mayhem in LA! Cars Must Be Banned!

“There was mass carnage yesterday on the Venice Beach boardwalk near LA when a man used his high-powered automobile to run over 12 people – killing one of them and sending the remainder to the hospital. The black car – a menacing color typically favored by the military – was used by a young man in his 20s – probably a loner. He may have bought the car without a background check, since these are not mandatory in California. Anyone can just go out and buy a car ‘under the table’ – from an unlicensed seller. There are no laws requiring that high-powered cars be kept securely stored, with their ignitions disabled or locked.”

MLB’s Magglio Ordonez, Who Earned $133 Million, Running for City’s Mayor—as a Socialist

EPJ13

“Ordonez, who earned about $133 million over his professional career, according to baseball-reference.com, supported Chavez’s ’21st Century Socialism.’ In 2009, he told Venezuelans in political ads that ‘the best of the revolution is yet to come.’  The obvious question is: Does Ordonez plan to share his millions with the people of Puerto La Cruz or does he see himself as exempt from the share the wealth schemes of socialist planners?”

Ranch House Near Reno is a Thriving Tax Haven, and It’s Not Alone

“Shielding assets from the tax man or from overly inquisitive regulators is a time-honored strategy for the wealthy. Some turn to secretive financial havens like Switzerland or the Cayman Islands. Or there’s always Fernley, Nevada.  [There] you will find the unassuming home of businessman Robert Harris, 65, who describes himself as a former bartender with an eighth grade education. The house is also home to some 2,400 Nevada corporations, all registered to Harris’ address.  For a little extra money, Harris offers what he calls ‘Ultimate Asset Protection,’ which includes a ‘virtual office with phone message and fax forwarding.'”

CIA Should Probably Stop Having Drones Fire Again On Whoever Shows Up After a Strike

“Double tapping is sure to make even those who support the use of drones at least a little queasy. To many, it is uncomfortably similar to the tactics used by some of the terrorists we are supposed to be morally superior to: Hamas, for example. Some argue that it is a violation of international law, including at least one UN official. At the very least, it is a risky tactic for a country that holds itself up as an example of rectitude in the world and it weakens our moral authority. Worse yet, it creates a justification that could be used against us by future enemies who don’t even pretend to have our level of regard for human life.”

FBI allowed informants to commit 5,600 crimes in one year

“The FBI gave its informants permission to break the law at least 5,658 times in a single year. Agents authorized 15 crimes a day, on average, including everything from buying and selling illegal drugs to bribing government officials and plotting robberies. FBI officials have said in the past that permitting their informants — who are often criminals themselves — to break the law is an indispensable, if sometimes distasteful, part of investigating criminal organizations.  USA TODAY asked the FBI for all of the reports it had prepared since 2006, but FBI officials said they could locate only one, which they released after redacting nearly all of the details.”
