He could be sentenced to 30 years in prison. Freedom Hosting hosted sites on the The Onion Router (Tor) network, which anonymises and encrypts traffic, masking the identity of users. Users on the Tor sub-Reddit were suspicious about the news, dissecting the details of the vulnerability and pointing to a previous case where the FBI had taken over and maintained a site hosting child abuse material for two weeks in order to identify users.”

America Is a Tax Haven…and That’s a Very Good Thing

“While there are many bad things about the American tax system (including pervasive double taxation and a very uncompetitive corporate tax system), one of few redeeming features of our tax system is that we are a tax haven. Not for Americans, of course, but it turns out we have some good rules for foreigners.  I’ve already noted that Delaware is one of the world’s best tax havens because of its attractive incorporation policies, but we also have very attractive federal tax rules.  Foreigners take advantage of these policies in ways that attract huge amounts of money to the American economy – more than $25 trillion according to the Commerce Department!”

Florida education chief resigns after fixing charter school grades for GOP donor

“Florida Commissioner of Education Tony Bennett resigned on Thursday after he was accused of changing a grading system while serving as Indiana school superintendent so that a Republican donor’s charter school would not receive bad marks. An Associated Press report earlier this week found that Bennett had quickly overhauled a school grading system after discovering that high-profile charter school Christel House was expected to receive a ‘C’ grade. Under a revised formula, the school was awarded an ‘A’ grade.  Bennett had left Indiana to take the top education job in Florida in January.”

Senator Schumer: Putin is behaving like a schoolyard bully

Al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri says U.S. behind coup against Mohamed Morsi

“The head of al-Qaida has accused the US of overthrowing the former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, but also said he was responsible for his own downfall by for trying to appease Washington. Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian, said Morsi, who was deposed in a coup on 3 July, was targeted for being an Islamist by a conspiracy of secularists, Coptic Christians, and Egypt’s ‘Americanised’ army. But in his 15-minute internet audio message posted online on Friday, Zawahiri condemned Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood for having ‘tried its best to satisfy America and the secularists’ by relinquishing jihad, usually defined by al-Qaida to mean armed struggle.”
