Bill Gates: Flip-Flopping IP Hypocrite

“A couple decades ago, Bill Gates seemed to have some appreciation of the damage wrought by patent law.  Yet over the years Microsoft relied on the other major form of intellectual property—copyright—to dominate aspects of the software industry, and then to use the monopoly profits to accumulate thousands of patents. These two forms of IP are then used together to squelch competition. Now that Gates has used state-granted IP monopolies to acquire billions of dollars that he can then use to be a bigshot philanthropist, he is all for patents (as my friend Rob Wicks says, Gates is ‘America’s wealthiest welfare queen’).”

How Do Ponzi Schemes End?

goodman_john_100x1332

“Detroit promised police officers, firefighters, teachers and other public employees pension and post-retirement health care benefits, but was unwilling to set aside the money needed to fund those benefits. The city attracted workers with a total compensation package that included current wages and future benefits. Since the future benefits were substantially unfunded, they can be paid only if future taxpayers pay them. But the future taxpayers never agreed to this deal. If they do pay, they will be paying for services delivered in the past. If they don’t pay, they won’t have to sacrifice any current city services. So the future taxpayers have flown the coop.”

Government releases declassified documents on NSA spying authorization

“The U.S. Director of National Intelligence released three declassified documents that authorized and explained the bulk collection of phone data, one of the secret surveillance programs revealed by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The declassification was made in the ‘interest of increased transparency,’ the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement. Much of what is contained in the documents has already been divulged in public hearings by intelligence officials as they sought to detail what was initially disclosed by Snowden.”

Committing War Crimes is a Duty; Reporting Them is a Felony

“Prior to his trial, Manning was held for nine months in an especially severe form of solitary confinement that involved forced nudity, sleep deprivation, and persistent abuse. His treatment, which constituted torture, won him a reduction off 112 days from the prison sentence he will receive for the supposed offense of exposing officially sanctioned crimes.  If Manning had been a war criminal, rather than an honorable soldier who exposed war crimes, his pre-trial confinement would have led to dismissal of the charges against him – or his sentence being overturned.”

Jacob Hornberger: The Real Criminals Under Our National-Security State System

hornberger2

“People Who Are Considered Heroes by the National-Security State: 1. The officials who devised the scheme that plunged America into the illegal world of torture.  2. The officials who actually committed the crime of torture. 3. The officials who induced private telecommunication firms to engage in illegal monitoring of their customer’s telephone calls. 4. The officials who devised the scheme that plunged America into the illegal world of assassination. 5. The officials who have actually committed the assassinations. 6. The officials who devised the scheme to establish a Constitution-free torture and indefinite-incarceration zone at Guantanamo Bay. […]”

How the Media Has Distorted a Tragedy

“As a fiction, Zimmerman the white supremacist rivals Obama the Kenyan-born commie Muslim. Obama is right that our racial history—a history in which, a few decades ago, young black males in much of the country really could be murdered at will for looking at a white person the wrong way—gave Trayvon Martin’s death a powerful and painful resonance for black Americans. That made it all the more incumbent on the media to be scrupulously truthful and responsible in their coverage. At this, they have spectacularly failed, with deplorable consequences.”

US Files Criminal Charges Against SAC For the Non-Crime Of Insider Trading

EPJ13

“US prosecutors brought criminal charges against SAC Capital, the hedge fund run by billionaire Steve Cohen, alleging the $15 billion fund engaged in ‘systemic insider trading’ for 11 years, reports FT.  SAC was charged with one count of wire fraud and four counts of securities fraud. Prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of hundreds of millions of dollars in allegedly illegal profits.  The fraud was ‘substantial, pervasive and on a scale without known precedent in the hedge fund industry,’ the government said in the indictment.”

Democratic establishment unmasked: prime defenders of NSA bulk spying

“Now, a bill to ban the government from collecting the telephone records of all Americans, while expressly allowing it to collect the records of anyone for whom there is evidence of wrongdoing, is – in the language of the House Democratic Leadership – a bill to Protect The Terrorists. This is the same Nancy Pelosi who spent years during the Bush administration pretending to be a vehement opponent of the illegal Bush NSA warrantless eavesdropping program after it was revealed by the New York Times, even though (just as was true of the Bush torture program) she was secretly briefed on it many years earlier when it was first implemented.”

IRS Wants to Be Exempt from Obamacare While also Making the Rest of Us Comply

“There are lots of despicable people in Washington engaged in a lot of unsavory behavior, so it would be very difficult to get agreement if you asked regular people to select the most odious feature of the political class. Many people would probably choose corruption as the defining characteristic of Washington, and it would be hard to argue with that choice, but I think hypocrisy is an even better choice. There’s something fundamentally wrong when people push for policies while making sure they don’t have to abide by the results. Yet it happens all the time in government.”

Half of Affordable Care Act call center jobs will be part-time

“Earlier this year, Contra Costa County won the right to run a health care call center, where workers will answer questions to help implement the president’s Affordable Care Act. Now, with two months to go before the Concord operation opens to serve the public, information has surfaced that about half the jobs are part-time, with no health benefits — a stinging disappointment to workers and local politicians who believed the positions would be full-time. The Contra Costa County supervisor whose district includes the call center called the whole hiring process — which attracted about 7,000 applicants — a ‘comedy of errors.'”
