Justice Scalia Thinks US Concentration Camps ‘Will Happen Again’

“Concentration camps just went mainstream in the US.  Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia told law students in Hawaii that the Supreme Court does not uphold the Constitution, and that they should anticipate the court to issue more rulings along the same lines as those enabling the internment of US citizens not charged with a crime, just like as happened during World War II. Why? To answer this question,  Justice Scalia quotes Marcus Tullius Cicero, who said that ‘laws are silent in times of war’. Scalia said the court was wrong, ‘but you are kidding yourself if you think the same thing will not happen again.'”

Meet the Mega Cops: High-Tech Crime Gear Transforms Police Work

“A police cruiser now typically is equipped with at least one laptop, giving instant access to national criminal databases, as well as portable fingerprint scanners, Breathalyzer units and automatic license-plate-reader technology that can identify stolen cars while cruising down the street, even at a high speeds. And while not department issued, personal smart phones and, specifically, policing-related apps are expanding officers’ one-stop data search capabilities.  They also are toting far more firepower, typically high-caliber semi-automatic pistols and rifles with assorted magazine clips, as well as less-lethal beanbag shotguns and tasers.”

the common thread in U.S. policing as recently as a generation ago: the expectation that the typical patrol officer best protected and served his community by guarding his piece of turf and busting, intimidating or expelling any bad guy who entered it.

But experts and veteran law enforcement officials say that straight-forward mission is rapidly giving way to a more complex and nuanced form of policing. It’s a world in which technology and instant communication help that beat cop serve and protect, while simultaneously demanding new levels of training and accountability and raising serious civil liberties concerns.

Militarized Police: The Standing Army the Founders Warned About

“Steadily and speedily, the force of the militarized police is denying citizens the protections of fundamental civil liberties afforded us by the Bill of Rights. While there remain legions of law enforcement officers devoted to protecting and serving their fellow citizens, the federal government’s proffer of powerful, free or almost free, weapons, vehicles, gear, and tactical training is making the allure of becoming an unofficial branch of the armed forces irresistible.”

Armed Mundanes: The Reason Why SWAT Teams Exist

Police in Ankeny, Iowa deployed a 12-member SWAT team in full battle array to execute a warrant in an investigation of alleged credit card fraud. The invasion of Sally Prince’s home was captured on camera, despite efforts to destroy the home security cameras used to record their crime.  The invaders did not find any of the items listed in the search warrant. Captain Makai Echer insisted that the military-style assault was necessary and justified because the department was aware that an occupant of the home had a firearms permit.  Gun ownership is one of the key considerations in the standardized ‘Threat Matrix’ used in planning SWAT operations.”

Is Crazed Super Bowl Security a Taste of America To Come?

“In the run-up to Super Bowl XLVIII (just be happy they don’t use Egyptian numerals), the New York City Police Department is deploying an ‘amazing arsenal of security initiatives,’ including 200 ‘temporary’ surveillance cameras to ensure that dirty deeds remain undone at the big game. That’s remarkable, since City Hall in the rotten apple is actually about 11 miles from the site of the kickoff at MetLife Stadium, which is in East Rutherford, New Jersey. But never fear, security at the the Super Bowl itself promises to make attendance at football’s championship game an awful lot like spending several hours at a very cold TSA checkpoint—with some watery beer.  Get used to it America.”

How federal agents became the movie industry’s copyright enforcers

“What brought them to an Ohio shopping mall to jump an unsuspecting local nerd?  In 2008, Congress passed the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property, or PRO-IP Act. Suddenly, protecting the trademarks and copyrights of American companies became a huge priority for a number of law enforcement agencies, including ICE.  Soon, ICE was enforcing American intellectual property rights all over the globe. In 2009, the agency arrested 266 people in IP investigations, busting people who sell counterfeit movies, stream pirated content on websites, and sell licensed NFL gear. ICE more than doubled that number of arrests over the next two years.”

The Greatest Threat to Our Freedoms Is the Government

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“We have moved beyond the era of representative government and entered a new age, let’s call it the age of authoritarianism. History may show that from this point forward, we will have left behind any semblance of constitutional government and entered into a militaristic state where all citizens are suspects and security trumps freedom. Even with its constantly shifting terrain, this topsy-turvy travesty of law and government has become America’s new normal. It is not overstating matters to say that Congress, which has done its best to keep their unhappy constituents at a distance, may well be the most self-serving, semi-corrupt institution in America.”

Out-of-control police overreach meets extreme secrecy

“If it seems to you that the police are becoming more violent, you may be right. In 2011, Los Angeles County police shot to death 54 people, some 70 percent more than in 2010. Between 2008 and 2013, the number of people shot by Massachusetts police increased every year. In 2012, police in New York City shot and killed 16 people, nine more the previous year and the most in 12 years. In 2012, Philadelphia police shot 52 people—the highest number in 10 years.  But whether these statistics reflect a national trend is, at this point, an unanswerable question.  That’s because many of the country’s 17,000 police departments don’t release information on use of force by police.”

Secret Military Training Blurs Line Between Police and Soldiers

“As the military transitions into a tech-heavy force, increasingly reliant on robots and drones, local police forces are looking less like law enforcement and more like heavily armored combat units. Now, it seems they are starting to train like them, as well.  A story reported on recent secret joint training missions between U.S. Army special forces and the Richland County (South Carolina) Sheriff’s Department.  The article describes training exercises being conducted by ‘unidentified units’ from Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. A spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department refused to identify who was participating in the exercise or why it was being carried out.”

Plunder-Lusting Quislings Seek to Repeal Posse Comitatus

“A bill before the Idaho State Legislature, HB 367, would effectively abolish the Posse Comitatus Act as it applies to law enforcement in the Gem State.  When authorized to act as a ‘state law enforcement agency,’ the Guard will be allowed to participate ‘in the sharing of property seized or forfeited and receive property and revenues…..’  This would allow any of the state’s 44 sheriffs to seek the assistance of the National Guard any time they anticipate resistance to a forfeiture action. After all, everybody in Idaho has guns, a fact that has been invoked by police officials across the state to justify the acquisition of combat-grade armored vehicles from the Pentagon.”
