How Police Became a Standing Army

“America has been transformed into a country where police conduct something on the order of 50,000 SWAT raids a year.  The trend towards police militarization did not begin in earnest until the 1960s, when law enforcement struggled with civil unrest and cracked down on the drugs associated with political dissidents and the counterculture. It also crept in subtly through ‘indirect militarization,’ when domestic law enforcement agencies ‘take on more and more characteristics of an army.’ That phenomenon can largely be traced to longtime Los Angeles Chief of Police Daryl Gates, who founded America’s first SWAT team.”

Handcuffed at USA Border From Canada, Treated like Terrorist

“I asked to speak to an attorney, but he said I couldn’t. Border Control didn’t have to allow it because I was not proven to be a US citizen, because my fingerprints came back as Canadian.  He informed me an ICE agent was on the way; She would determine what to do with me.  An hour or so later, he and the guard who initially handcuffed me came back and questioned me again. I gave her the answers, then informed them again that because of my constitutional rights I was requesting an attorney. They said I had no rights. I said, ‘Okay, so my prints are not coming back as me, and I’m not the guy the computer says I am, so I’m a nobody, huh?’ She said yes, that was the best way to put it.”

Why I’m Leaving

“My grandparents emigrated from Portugal to Mozambique during the 1940s and 50s in search of a better life. The massive and undeveloped colony seemed like the land of milk and honey for those willing to get their hands dirty. A few decades later my parents-to-be immigrated to South Africa as Mozambique headed towards what would become a 10-year war for independence. Then when I was just 4 years old they decided that a fascist state fully enveloped with the evils of apartheid was no place to raise a child. My mother was fortunate enough to get a work visa into the United States and that’s where we’ve been ever since.  Now the time has come for me to follow in my family’s footsteps.”

NYPD a ‘quasi-military organization,’ according to outgoing Ray Kelly

“Outgoing-NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly echoed soon-to-be-ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg with big words about the city’s boys in blue.  Bloomberg provoked a fair share of criticism from Big Apple residents in late 2011 when he said, ‘I have my own army in the NYPD . . . the seventh biggest army in the world.’  Kelly will soon join the Council on Foreign Relations — a dominant international policy think-tank — where he will still be able to stay close to his fellow New Yorkers. Even in his post-NYPD career, Kelly will receive a taxpayer-funded ten-man security detail that is reported to cost NYC residents around $1.5 million a year.”

Court Upholds Willy-Nilly Gadget Searches Along U.S. Border

“A federal judge today upheld a President Barack Obama administration policy allowing authorities along the U.S. border to seize and search laptops, smartphones and other electronic devices for any reason.  Alarmingly, the government contends the Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone stretches 100 miles inland from the nation’s actual border.  The judge said it ‘would be foolish, if not irresponsible’ to store sensitive information on electronic devices while traveling internationally.  Between 2008 and 2010, 6,500 persons had their electronic devices searched along the U.S. border, according to DHS data.”

Wall Street adviser recommends guns, ammo for protection in collapse

There are some terrible people in this world. And you are safer when your trusted neighbors have firearms.'”
