NYC Housing Authority ordered workers not to speak to media or politicians after Sandy

“In the chaotic days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) general manager Cecil House sent out a memo ordering staffers not to speak to elected officials or members of the press. According to the New York Daily News, the memo went out on Nov. 2, after the storm had knocked out power, heat and hot water to some 80,000 residents in 400 buildings.  Critics charge that the agency has moved too slowly in the wake of the storm, which struck on October 29. An estimated 7,000 residents of the city’s housing projects are still without basic services. Some workers and local politicians are furious.”

Federal “Compassion” at work: Sandy Victims Imprisoned in FEMA Camps

“Residents of a FEMA refugee center in Oceanport, New Jersey called ‘Camp Freedom’ complain that their living conditions resemble those of a prison camp. Not only are they been left exposed to the cold and deprived of promised amenities such as washing machines and hot showers, they have also been cut off from nearly all contact with the outside world. They are denied WiFi access, not allowed to use smart phones, and have been forbidden to take pictures of their surroundings.  Up to 900 of the 5,200 Staten Island residents who applied for FEMA housing could be warehoused in the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility.”

I moved to Japan on the very day my probation finished.”

Oklahoma Man On No Fly List Fighting To Come Home

“An overseas Oklahoman who hasn’t been on the Sooner soil for more than a decade is now fighting to come home.  Forty-three-year-old Saadiq Long lives in Qatar where he teaches English. In April, the U.S. Air Force veteran was told he was on the Department of Homeland Security’s no fly list.  He’s been fighting to get taken off the list ever since, but now he’s running out of time.  Long’s mother who still lives in McAlester is terminally ill. Long will try to fly back to Oklahoma this week to visit her, perhaps for the final time.  Long, a U.S. citizen, hasn’t been given a reason for why he’s on the list.”

No-Fly List Strands Man In Hawaii

“The 34-year-old from Gulfport, Miss., was stranded in the islands this week after being told he was on the FBI’s no-fly list during a layover for a military flight from California to Japan.  The episode left Hicks scrambling to figure out how he’d get home from Hawaii without being able to fly.   How could someone on a list intelligence officials use to inform counterterrorism investigations successfully fly standby on an Air Force flight?  He wasn’t told why and wondered whether his controversial views on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks played a role. Hicks said he disagrees with the 9/11 Commission’s conclusions about the attacks.”

“The government argues that CMPs are needed to prevent courtroom disclosure of sensitive evidence from causing damage to the so-called ‘control principle’ governing intelligence shared between states.  Secret evidence, which is already used in terrorism-related immigration tribunals, allows government lawyers to rely on evidence that cannot be seen by victims or claimants, or their lawyers. The evidence can be seen by security-vetted barristers known as special advocates, but they cannot discuss what they have seen. The system is widely regarded as inherently unfair and would inevitably lead to legal challenges.”

Yet most of the nation’s 3,000 jails lack dedicated facilities for children – leaving them with no alternative but to place kids in solitary. A majority of people in jail are there awaiting trial, which means many children in solitary have not even been convicted of a crime.”
