“What is the legacy of Guantanamo Bay? 171 men continue to languish there. The Bush torture program has been legitimized by the Obama administration, and indefinite detention has been codified as law. Guantanamo bleeds our coffers, costing $800,000 a year per detainee. And with a government that possesses the awesome power to indefinitely detain whomever it pleases, we are much, much less safe than we were 11 years ago. Despite these obvious warning signs of a coming authoritarian state, a CNN poll from 2010 indicates that 60 percent of Americans would like Guantanamo to remain open.”

Federal Guilty Pleas Soar As Bargains Trump Trials

“The triumph of plea bargaining in the federal system, which has gathered pace in recent years, is nearly complete. Guilty pleas last year resolved 97% of all federal cases that the Justice Department prosecuted to a conclusion. That is up from 84% in 1990. During that period, the number of federal defendants nearly doubled amid a crackdown on crimes ranging from drug trafficking to fraud, while the number going to trial fell by nearly two-thirds. Behind the dominance of the plea bargain is the rapid growth in the number of federal criminal laws and the stiffening of sentences.”

New cameras to watch cameras that watch you

“Many people find speed cameras frustrating, and some in the region are taking their rage out on the cameras themselves. But now there’s a new solution: cameras to watch the cameras. One is already in place, and Prince George’s County Police Maj. Robert V. Liberati hopes to have up to a dozen more before the end of the year. Liberati is the Commander of the Automated Enforcement Section, which covers speed and red-light cameras. Since April, six people have damaged speed cameras.”

Dead Gitmo detainee was cleared for release in 2009

“The disclosure that the detainee, Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif, a 32-year-old Yemeni citizen, had been approved for repatriation could raise new questions about the handling of his case and those of scores of others held in Gitmo who also have been cleared for release. Instead, the detainees remain stuck in legal limbo in the U.S. prison for suspected terrorists with no prospect for getting out any time soon.”
Now TSA agents are testing drinks purchased INSIDE the airport

“Travelers’ angst is being taken up a notch now that TSA agents are adding yet another seemingly arbitrary security check at airports. The federal agency is now deploying its staff to test beverages purchased by travelers after they were screened at the security checkpoint. Video from the Columbus, Ohio Airport, uploaded to YouTube on Monday, show security personnel canvassing a departure gate, asking people at random if they could check their drinks for explosives.”
The Prisons we call “Airports”
“A woman who had passed through airport security in Houston was detained by the Transportation Security Administration and forbidden to board the plane as punishment for exhibiting a ‘bad attitude.’ The TSA, which apparently exists in order to provide gainful employment for deviants and petty criminals, recently began a policy of testing beverages for explosives. This includes bottled drinks and coffee purchased by airline customers inside secure areas of airports.”

Nebraska school district wants deaf child to change how he signs his name

“A deaf Nebraska boy was in the middle of a dispute between his school and his parents after the school threatened to make him change the way he signs his name. According to KOLN-TV, 3-year-old Hunter Spanjer had been asked to make the change because his local school district, Grand Island Public Schools, allegedly thought his crossing his index and middle fingers while moving his hand up and down broke a rule against ‘anything that looks like a weapon.’ Hunter’s family said that the sign is registered through the Signing Exact English (SEE) language system.”

Security Meltdown at Republican Convention in Tampa
“When I started counting, the number of machine guns strapped to National Guard or Secret Service personnel totaled 28. All roads but one leading to the Forum were barricaded, some with snowplow trucks, and the line of cars and trucks angling to make it through wrapped around two blocks. Ditching the car, it took an hour to make it inside through twisting paths marked by security fences and confused guards. And that was before making it to a dark, covered, leaky passageway featuring wet blue Astroturf. The more troubling news is the Secret Service decision not to allow umbrellas within the perimeter.”
Lance Armstrong and Kim Dotcom … Guilty Until Proven Innocent?

“Their rules, their taxpayer-funded pocketbook, their system, their judgment as to whether the accusations warrant further investigation. The two cases are dissimilar but in many ways are much the same. The authorities make up their minds and impose harsh economic and legal conditions that basically punish the individual even before trial. In my humble estimation, none of this is by accident. The powers-that-be are desperate. The West’s judicial system is to be seen as defunct. It’s simply another form of intimidation.”
Arijit Vs. Delta

“We had cleared the security checkpoint without incident, but while waiting at the gate, a Delta supervisor informed me my shirt (this one here, designed by Cory Doctorow) had made numerous passengers and employees ‘very uncomfortable.’ I was then questioned by TSA about the significance and meaning of the shirt. I politely explained that it was ‘mocking the security theater charade and over-reactions to terrorism by the general public — both of which we’re seeing right now, ironically.'”
