For GOP mega-donors, a convention of their own

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/120823_rnc_convention_ap_605.jpg

“The real action will be with the Republican mega-donors gathered in arena skyboxes, closed-door hotel ballrooms and pricey restaurants around town.  They’re holding a sort of convention of their own in Florida next week.  Some of the party’s biggest names will deliver personalized briefings, pep talks and fundraising appeals. And no need to hang out with delegates or the media – bundlers who have committed to raising $250,000 or more for Mitt Romney’s campaign also get access to a VIP lounge and treated to special performances by Don Felder, the former lead guitarist for The Eagles, and the Oakridge Boys country band.”

More on the Rotten Republicans

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/thelrcblog-50019.gif

“I am on that rules committee that passed the rule allowing candidates to throw out national delegates and alternates. The article you linked missed another detail in the proposal whereby all national delegates and national alternates are bound at future conventions even if state party rules leave them unbound. It also prohibits a caucus/convention process in Minnesota and elsewhere from deciding which candidate wins the support of the state’s delegates.”

Mocking Obama, Romney, and the Rest of the Political Clowns

“It’s been more than one month since I posted the last collection of jokes and one-liners from the late-night talk show hosts.  So without further adieu, courtesy of the folks at Newsmax.com, are my favorites since that time. I’m surprised there’s not more material about Todd Akin, but that may change in coming days.  My favorite is the ’50 states’ comment from Leno.”

Watchdog who exonerated Obama on energy loans now an Obama donor

“A veteran Wall Street executive who performed an independent review that exonerated the Obama administration’s program of loans to energy companies contributed $52,500 to re-elect President Barack Obama in the months since completing his work, according to an Associated Press review of campaign records. The campaign contributions to Obama started just weeks after Herbert M. Allison Jr., in congressional testimony in March, minimized concerns that the Energy Department was at high risk in more than $23 billion in federal loans awarded to green energy firms.”

Did Romney disqualify himself by accepting foreign cash?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Screen-Shot-2012-08-14-at-3.05.55-PM.png

“McCain continued: ‘Which says that, obviously, maybe in a roundabout way, foreign money is coming into an American campaign—to American political campaigns.’  This is significant because just this January the Supreme Court held that while Citizens United allows corporations and people to donate anonymously and in unlimited quantities to campaigns through Super PACs, foreign cash is strictly forbidden in American elections. Collecting campaign money from foreign nationals is actually a felony that disqualifies you from an election.”

Romney’s Convention Power Play: Sununu Evades Ron Paul Delegates To Avoid Floor Fight

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/ashley-ryan-ron-paul-delegate.jpg

“The drama Friday centered around a contentious meeting of the powerful Rules Committee, where Romney’s campaign lieutenants, led by his legal counsel Ben Ginsberg, pushed through several changes that would give Romney broad authority over the Republican nominating process.  According to one source who was at the meeting, the saga ended with former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu, the committee chair, hightailing it out of the building before committee members could submit dissenting minority opinions, or ‘minority reports.'”

Justin Raimondo: The Iron Fist in Tampa

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/behindheadline540cr2.gif

“The idea that this convention is part of the “democratic” process is a joke: it is no more free and open than an old-style Soviet party convention. What’s going on in Tampa is the culmination of a process that has nothing to do with democracy, and everything to do with legitimizing the control of party bosses, corporate interests, and, most important of all, the War Party over the nominating process and the two-party duopoly. For all their talk of ‘freedom’ in the abstract, when it comes to their own party, the Republicans are ruthless authoritarians: we’re about to see that demonstrated in Tampa.”

Why Ron Paul’s presidential campaign may be the last of its kind

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Ron_Paul_Maine_0f6b7.jpg

“Republican officials have voted to change the way the party will nominate its presidential candidates in future elections in an effort to ensure that delegates to the national convention are bound by the outcome of states’ primaries and caucuses.  It’s more than a technicality. The change would make it nearly impossible in the future for rebellious Republican presidential candidates like Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) to rack up substantial delegate support in states when they do not win the states’ nominating contests.”
