Kansas rallies behind teacher facing deportation after 30+ years

“Mr Jamal, a 55-year-old Bangladeshi-born chemistry professor, was arrested on his front lawn nearly two weeks ago by immigration officials as he stepped out to drop his daughter to school in Lawrence, Kansas.  His wife and other two children rushed out but even before they could say goodbye, he was led away in handcuffs.  He has been moved from a detention centre in Missouri to a facility near El Paso, Texas, close to the border. All three of Mr Jamal’s children – seven, 12 and 14 – are US citizens and his wife has a medical condition that limits her mobility, making him the sole provider for the family.”

How Prosecutors Score a Windfall Turning Small Tickets Into Big Fees

“A private, for-profit law firm called Silver and Wright was hired by Indio in 2014 to serve as the city’s official prosecutor for code enforcement cases. The firm’s pitch was appealing. Virtually all states that suspend licenses for unpaid debt do so indefinitely, with rules that prevent reinstatement until full payment is made.”

Police Tackled, Arrested Homeowner Who Refused Warrantless Entry

“The Dantzlers refused to allow the police to enter and search their home and indicated that they should get a warrant if they wanted to do so. One officer then seized Huntly Dantzler, handcuffed him, pulled him away from the door and threw him to the ground. Alarmed by the treatment of her husband and the inherent coercion, Susan Dantzler allowed one of the officers to enter the house and look around. After searching the house and finding nothing, the officers left. Huntly Dantzler was compelled to seek medical care for deep gashes on wrists left by the handcuffs.”
