Few Problems With Cannabis for California

“California’s 17-year experience as the first state to legalize medical marijuana offers surprising lessons, experts say.  Warnings voiced against partial legalization — of civic disorder, increased lawlessness and a drastic rise in other drug use — have proved unfounded.  Instead, research suggests both that marijuana has become an alcohol substitute for younger people here and in other states that have legalized medical marijuana, and that while driving under the influence of any intoxicant is dangerous, driving after smoking marijuana is less dangerous than after drinking alcohol.”

Australia releases draft legislation repealing mining tax

mineweblogo4

“‘The MRRT is a complex and unnecessary tax which struggled to raise the substantial revenue predicted by the former Government,’ Treasurer Joe Hockey said in a statement today. ‘Further still, this failed tax imposed significant compliance costs on one of our most important industries, while damaging business confidence which is critical to future investment and jobs.’  ‘The former Government linked a number of spending measures to the failed MRRT,’ he said. ‘These came at a significant cost to the Budget, to the point where the Government is borrowing money to pay for these commitments.'”

The Good News Is That the Bad News about Kansas Was Wrong

“When Kansas cut its taxes, Oklahoma’s tax consumers predicted fiscal collapse or stress for our neighbors. Various Republican policymakers joined the chorus.  But often, he or she who dares, wins.  Kansas and Oklahoma have taken different courses. In the former, liberty is incrementally advancing. In the latter, government is incrementally advancing. It is not hateful or mean-spirited to say this: These are factual statements. As OCPA’s fiscal policy director Jonathan Small told me: ‘Fundamentally, Governor Brownback and many lawmakers in Kansas have determined they truly believe that more dollars left with their citizens is better than any government spending they may choose.'”

Loophole In Canadian Law: Bitcoin Businesses Aren’t Really Regulated

“A loophole in Canadian law puts Bitcoin outside the scope of the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Center of Canada (FINTRAC), the agency that monitors money services businesses.  Business in Canada asked FINTRAC spokesman Peter Lamey why bitcoin exchanges and ATMs don’t fall into this category. He told us companies that deal in Bitcoin cannot be considered money services businesses under the current terms of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act. As he said, money is defined as the ‘currency of a country’. Bitcoin belongs not to any one country, but to the Internet.”

Residency in Puerto Rico as an Alternative to Expatriation

“What if I were to tell you that you can gain many of the tax benefits of expatriation without giving up your US citizenship?  The goal of this planning strategy is to leave America without leaving it for citizenship purposes.  Puerto Rico (PR) passed a series of stunning tax legislation in 2012, making the US Commonwealth highly desirable as a jurisdiction from a tax standpoint.  This article will focus on an alternative strategy to a taxpayer giving up their US citizenship for tax purposes and instead becoming a Puerto Rican resident for tax purposes.”

U.S. SEC to release long-awaited “crowdfunding” rule

“Private companies are now only allowed to solicit investors deemed to be ‘accredited,’ meaning they have a net worth of $1 million [..] or an individual annual income over $200,000. The crowdfunding rule would let small businesses raise up to $1 million a year by tapping unaccredited investors. Companies could sell stakes to mom-and-pop investors without registering the securities with the SEC, a move designed to make it cheaper and less cumbersome for struggling startups trying to get their businesses off the ground. They would still be required to raise the money through regulated broker-dealers such as CircleUp or through crowdfunding portals.”

Gallup Poll Finds 58% of Americans Support Legalizing Marijuana

“According to a new Gallup poll, 58 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana—the largest percentage ever in that survey. ‘Success at the ballot box in the past year in Colorado and Washington may have increased Americans’ tolerance for marijuana legalization,’ Gallup says. ‘Support for legalization has jumped 10 percentage points since last November and the legal momentum shows no sign of abating.’  Gallup cites personal experience with marijuana as a possible factor in rising support for legalization, noting that ‘a sizable percentage of Americans (38%) this year admitted to having tried the drug.'”

Uruguay to sell legal marijuana for $1 a gram

Uruguay‘s drug tsar says the country plans to sell legal marijuana for $1 a gram to combat drug-trafficking, according to a local newspaper. The plan to create a government-run legal marijuana industry has passed the lower house of Congress, and Uruguay’s president, José Mujica, expects to push it through the Senate soon as part of his effort to explore alternatives in the war on drugs. The measure would make Uruguay the first country in the world to license and enforce rules for the production, distribution and sale of marijuana for adult consumers.  He said the idea was not to make money but to fight petty crime and wrench the market away from illegal dealers.”

Google Launches Tools For Evading Government Control

“On its official blog, Google announced the launch of Project Shield, to help protect websites from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, the Digital Attack Map, which tracks DDoS attcks in realtime, so they can be exposed as they happen, and uProxy, a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that works like an easily shared personalized virtual private network (VPN) to allow people living under controlling regimes to surf the Web via connections to users elsewhere, evading censorship and surveillance.  Given the criticism that Google has come under for collaborating with the NSA and other elements of the U.S. government, it’s good to see them doing something for the good guys.”
