Hunger for bitcoin grows in Scandinavia as regulatory approach evolves

“Michael Grønager, COO of Payward (which is the company behind Kraken), is located in Denmark, which also plays host to bitcoin payment processing firm BIPS. That country has its own exchange, Bitcoin Nordic, and the Danes are also organizing the pan-Nordic bitcoin conference, on 28th November. Even some politicians are serious about it; the Liberal Alliance party, which has nine parliamentary seats, is now accepting bitcoin donations. Sweden has the Safello exchange, along with Kapiton, and mining hardware firmKnC Miner is there. In Norway, Coincloud is hoping to launch a bitcoin-based cloud storage service, while bitcoin exchange JustCoin is running zero-fee transactions.”

Anti-NSA group adopts highway to get close to Utah Data Center

“An organization opposed to surveillance by the National Security Agency has been approved to ” the section of highway running past the Utah Data Center, a move that would place the group’s protest-oriented name on signs outside the spy building. Restore The Fourth-Utah would also be responsible for picking up litter on the 2-mile stretch of Redwood Road that includes the main entrance to the Utah Data Center and Camp Williams. The name Restore The Fourth-Utah references the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing the right to be secure from unreasonable search and seizure.  Potter said the group plans to carry picket signs as it picks up litter.”

Swedish minister declares his support for principles to protect privacy

“Foreign Minister Carl Bildt acknowledged that internet governance is being challenged, as some States operate vast surveillance systems without any laws of oversight whatsoever, and others are preparing for offensive operations on the net.  The Foreign Minister called for the application of the principles of Legality, Legitimate Aim, Necessity, Adequacy, Proportionality, Judicial Authority, Transparency and Public Oversight to the conduct of online surveillance by States. Each of these principles forms part of the 13 International Principles, an initiative instigated by Privacy International and EFF in October 2012, well before the revelations of widespread NSA and GCHQ surveillance.”

China Banking Regulatory Commission: “No plans against Bitcoin”

“Whether intentionally or not, the CBRC’s statement has fed fuel to the Bitcoin fire, and set a precedent on how to address the legality Bitcoin in your country and according to your banks.  To all the high level banksters and 3rd world country leaders reading this article: Please take China’s example not Thailand’s example.  Given China’s prominent position among developing and emerging countries, It will be interesting to see in the coming months what the other 88 member nations of the AFI release to their public regarding Bitcoin.”

Defensive Interposition against Police Aggression

“There are at least two things I like about the encounter recorded in this video. The first was the use of righteous defensive force against an armed aggressor in uniform.  The second was the fact that the individual who interposed against the cop’s aggression then intervened to prevent serious injury when someone else decided to pile on once the primary aggressor had been put down. We will never see a ‘good cop’ intervene in similar fashion to prevent a punitive beating of a resisting Mundane. This is why thugscrums coalesce around prone, defenseless victims — and why genuinely decent people are purged from the ranks for trying to protect victims of police violence.”

Shutdown halts flow of new federal regulations

“The effects can already be seen in the Federal Register, where new regulations and draft rules are published daily.  Monday’s edition of the Federal Register, the last one published before the shutdown, clocked in at more than 400 pages and contained 40 rules or proposals for the public to look over, covering everything from fees charged by U.S. Marshals to protecting habitat for sea turtles.  Friday’s edition was less than a third the size and had just six rules. All but one was from the National Marine Fisheries Service, where workers are allowed to continue writing rules to prevent overfishing.”

Swiss pot group spotlights loophole in cannabis decriminalization law

“Authorities in Switzerland decriminalized possession of small amounts of cannabis earlier this month but a pot smokers group is already dispensing advice on how to avoid the penalty.  In a German-language brochure it advises users to lie to police to avoid paying the fine.  A person checked by police and found in possession of less than ten grams of cannabis ‘should not answer questions or lie’ about earlier consumption, the group says.  If a person admits to smoking ‘even a single joint’ police are then required to issue the 100-franc fine.  Someone who denies having smoked cannot be fined ‘and the piece of hash or little bag of weed’ they may be carrying cannot be confiscated.”

Silk Road supporters are trolling the FBI with Bitcoin

“Bitcoin users began sending the FBI small fractions of Bitcoin along with public comments to the federal law enforcement agency. A number of the comments include links to news articles about the Central Intelligence Agency supporting the family of drug lords in Afghanistan or helping Contras traffic cocaine in the U.S. A few railed against drug prohibition, while others simply made fart jokes. Some have expressed support for Ross William Ulbricht, the 29-year-old accused of running Silk Road and hiring hitmen to kill two people. And a handful have even used the opportunity to promote their causes and small businesses.”

Red State? Blue State? Try Green

“Red state? Blue state? When it comes to voters’ opinions on marijuana law reform, virtually all states are green.  According to a slew of recent statewide polls, voters’ support for legalizing marijuana crosses conventional red/blue boundaries. From Arizona (red) to Maryland (blue) and virtually all points in between, a solid majority of voters are in agreement that the time for legalization is now.  Here is a closer look at some of the more recent polls.”

Marc Andreessen: “The world is going to see an explosion of countries”

“Netscape founder and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen thinks the world is going to see an explosion of new countries in the years ahead.  ‘I think there is going to be double, triple, quadruple countries in the coming years,’ Andreessen said.  The cofounder of venture firm Andreessen Horowitz noted that the borders of today’s countries are in some cases arbitrary, pointing to Iraq, Syria, and much of Africa as artificial constructs.  He envisions a world in which neighboring countries choose to ally with each other and collaborate, rather than foment conflict. And, he thinks, software will play an important role in that cross-border cooperation.”
