Peer-to-Peer Economy Thrives as Activists Vacate the System

“Progressives may call it the ‘sharing economy’ while Libertarians may refer to it as Agorism –  a ‘society in which all relations between people are voluntary exchanges by means of counter-economics, thus engaging in a manner with aspects of peaceful revolution.’  Together, they’re opting out of the current socioeconomic matrix and creating a new alternative economy where trading occurs peer-to-peer and increasingly without government-issued currency.  It’s a space where mutual trade occurs without burdensome taxes, regulations, or licenses, an underground black market enabled by the Internet and regulated by social feedback mechanisms — and it’s growing exponentially.”

More Americans Want Less Strict Gun Laws

“Although the shooting has reignited the debate regarding gun control, fewer Americans today than after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012 believe laws governing gun sales should be made stricter. In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, 58 percent of Americans said gun laws should be made stricter, compared with 49 percent today.  Additionally, the percentage of Americans who said gun laws should be made less strict has increased from 6 percent in December 2012, to 13 percent now – the highest amount in Gallup’s survey history dating to 1990.”

Group aims to give out free shotguns in 15 cities

“The group is called the Armed Citizen Project, and as, their name says they want to arm citizens by giving them shotguns.  They aim to give out shotguns to people in fifteen cities including Chicago.  The group’s founder says they give the free guns to people living in medium to high crime areas so they can defend themselves from criminals.  Kyle Coplen founded the group based on his belief that guns are the ultimate deterrent to would-be criminals.  In Houston, Coplen says he hopes to arm one fourth of the neighborhood where his group is now giving away guns. Then signs would be put up warning criminals that the neighborhood is armed.”

Industrial hemp legalized in California

“Farmers in California may finally begin growing industrial hemp under a new law signed Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown.  Lawmakers have been discussing the proposal since 1999 to allow approved residents to grow hemp for industrial purposes by reclassifying the plant as a fiber or oilseed crop.  The law defines the crop as the nonpsychoactive types of the Cannabis sativa plant containing no more than 3/10 of 1 percent of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.  Supporters of the bill say hemp is a $500 million industry in California and is growing by 10 percent annually.”

Switzerland marijuana decriminalization begins October 1st

“From Tuesday, like a simple traffic offence, anyone over 18 caught in possession of up to ten grams of cannabis will receive a CHF100 ($110) fine and not have it put on their criminal record.   Supporters of the revision, which was approved by parliament a year ago, argue that liberalising the legislation and shifting from criminal offence to misdemeanour is a small but realistic approach to cannabis consumption.  The change brings Switzerland in line with other European countries that tolerate dope smoking in small amounts. Up to 500,000 people in Switzerland, which has a population of eight million, are believed to be occasional cannabis smokers.”

Rand Paul teams with Democrats on bill to curb NSA spying

“Four senators at the vanguard of bipartisan efforts to rein in US government spying programs announced the most comprehensive package of surveillance reforms so far presented on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.  The draft bill represented the first sign that key Republican and Democratic figures in the Senate are beginning to coalesce around a raft of proposals to roll back the powers of the National Security Agency in the wake of top-secret disclosures made by whistleblower Edward Snowden.”

The appetite in Washington for reform of surveillance programs was made apparent in July, when a House of Representatives proposal to effectively end the NSA’s bulk collection of phone records of millions of Americans was defeated by just 12 votes.

The amendment, brought by Republican Justin Amash and Democrat John Conyers, was strongly opposed by leaders of the two parties, the White House, and the intelligence establishment.

The fact it was only narrowly defeated revealed the depth of anger in some quarters of Capitol Hill over the perceived excesses of the NSA – and provided a glimpse of the potential strength of a House alliance between libertarian Republicans and left-leaning Democrats.

NYT: ‘Close the N.S.A.’s Back Doors’

“Crippling everyone’s ability to use encryption is going too far, just as the N.S.A. has exceeded its boundaries in collecting everyone’s phone records rather than limiting its focus to actual suspects. Representative Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, has introduced a bill that would, among other provisions, bar the government from requiring software makers to insert built-in ways to bypass encryption.  In the meantime, several Internet companies, including Google and Facebook, are building encryption systems that will be much more difficult for the N.S.A. to penetrate, forced to assure their customers that they are not a secret partner with the dark side of their own government.”

October 26th, 2013, Washington, D.C.: A Rally Against Mass Surveillance

“Right now the NSA is spying on everyone’s personal communications, and they’re operating without any meaningful oversight. Since the Snowden leaks started, more than 569,000 people from all walks of life have signed the StopWatching.us petition telling the U.S. Congress that we want them to rein in the NSA.  On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the US Patriot Act, we’re taking the next step and holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing the half-million petitions to Congress to remind them that they work for us — and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.”

Not Just Government; Americans Don’t Like Government Workers, Either

“Like an abused spouse increasingly appalled by a long-time partner’s behavior, Americans are falling out of love with the federal workers who enforce an endless litany of mandates, taxes and intrusions into their lives. New data from George Washington University’s Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration finds that, in addition to losing faith in the federal government itself, as other polls have revealed, a record number of Americans are losing faith in its loyal minions.   What could have happened in the past year to so erode respect for federal workers?”

Pressure Mounts for Marijuana Reform in Bermuda

“For Americans, mention ‘Bermuda’ and ‘marijuana’ and the first thing that comes to mind is a vision of vacationing cruise ship passengers arrested and fined in large amounts for carrying small quantities of the substance, like this Oakland medical marijuana patient last month or these two unfortunate tourists in April. But that could be about to change.  A mid-month meeting organized by the governing One Bermuda Alliance’s youth wing, the Future Bermuda Alliance, to discuss marijuana reform drew nearly a hundred residents and supporters, including two government ministers, both of whom expressed general support for the notion.”
