Jacob Hornberger: Gun Control? What About U.S. Arms Sales?

hornberger1

“While President Obama was tearing up to support his call for gun control, the U.S. military-industrial complex was celebrating its continued leadership in the sale of weaponry to foreign regimes. According to the New York Times, U.S. foreign arms deals increased nearly $10 billion in 2014. Total sales went from $26.7 billion in 2013 to $36.2 billion in 2014, a 35 percent increase.  Meanwhile, American statists, including those in the mainstream press, continue to scream about gun-show loopholes here in the United States but remain mute about the U.S. government’s #1 position in sales of guns and other weapons around the world.”

Chris Hedges, The American Empire: Murder Inc.

“‘In Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, it’s reached the point of political and social breakdown,’ Nairn said. ‘There’s no stopping it. It’s out of control. There are not two sides. It [has fractured into] many sides. It’s analogous to what happened in Cambodia, with the massive U.S. bombing of Cambodia, which paved the way for the rise of the Khmer Rouge. [It has destroyed] any semblance of normal politics or even society. In that kind of environment the most evil, the most violent, have a better chance to rise and prevail.’  Ceaseless war and indiscriminant killing define the U.S. imperial power. But this policy, he said, has backfired.”

U.S. Dropped 23,144 Bombs on Muslim-Majority Countries in 2015

“Council of Foreign Relations resident skeptic Micah Zenko recently tallied up how many bombs the United States has dropped on other countries and the results are as depressing as one would think. Zenko figured that since Jan. 1, 2015, the U.S. has dropped around 23,144 bombs on Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia, all countries that are majority Muslim.  The chart, provided by the generally pro-State Department think tank, puts in stark terms how much destruction the U.S. has leveled on other countries. Whether or not one thinks such bombing is justified, it’s a blunt illustration of how much raw damage the United States inflicts on the Muslim world.”

Reckless Frenemy Saudi Arabia Makes World More Dangerous for America

“Saudi Arabia and Iran continue to turn their national struggle into a religious conflict. The first is dangerous. The second could be catastrophic.  Yet Riyadh, America’s nominal ally, just demonstrated that it is the more reckless of the two states by executing Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.  There is much bad to say about Tehran’s authoritarian and interventionist Islamic regime. But even worse is Saudi Arabia, considered by Washington to be a valued ally.  The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is essentially a totalitarian state. Purported ‘antiterrorism’ legislation allowed the ‘authorities to press terrorism charges against anyone who demands reform, exposes corruption or otherwise engages in dissent.'”

The Deceptive Debate Over What Causes Terrorism Against the West

“By pointing out the causal connection between U.S. violence and the decision to bring violence to the West, one is not denying that the attackers lack agency, nor is one claiming they are ‘forced’ by the West to do this, nor is one ‘infantilizing’ them. To recognize this causation is to do exactly the opposite: to point out that some human beings will decide — using their rational and reasoning faculties and adult decision-making capabilities — that violence is justified and even necessary against those who continually impose violence and aggression on others ”

Children Caught In Sweep as Feds Begin Mass Deportations

“The coordinated raids over the weekend focused mostly in Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Monday, and constituted the first wave of mass deportations that could impact up to 15,000 people. The plan was revealed just before the Christmas holiday, which many criticized as particularly inhumane timing.  According to the advocacy organization #Not1More Deportation, in the Atlanta area starting on Saturday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ‘barged into homes, even when asked for warrants at the door, removing mothers and children as young as 4 years old.'”

Standoff In Oregon After Feds Convict Ranchers Under Terrorism Statute

“Two ranchers from Burns, Oregon have been convicted of terrorism because twice over the last decade-and-a-half they did what ranchers have been doing since arriving in the west.  The father and son performed controlled burns.  When the men were initially sentenced a judge balked at the ridiculously harsh guidelines and was lenient.  Washington, D.C. appealed and a liberal court in San Francisco ordered the ranchers back to prison.  The ranchers also bowed to a government demand that if they sell land some concoction known as the BLM gets right of first refusal.  As the Hammond Ranch falters with its operators behind bars the federal beast can devour even more ground.”

US aimed to nuke civilian populations in enemy cities during Cold War

“A newly released Cold War-era list of nuclear targets shows the US planned to inflict ‘systematic destruction’ on enemy cities and target the ‘population’ of those areas. It is the most comprehensive Cold War nuclear target list to become declassified.  The Strategic Air Command (SAC) Atomic Weapons Requirements Study for 1959, produced in June 1956, was published by the National Security Archive on Tuesday.  Totaling almost 800 pages, the document details targets in over 1,200 cities, including Moscow, Beijing, and Warsaw. The list for each city contains details on targeting the population, along with industrial and infrastructural targets.”

FBI built 1800-page file on singer Pete Seeger over 20-year period

“The bureau’s spies first took an interest in the singer in 1943. Seeger, a 23-year-old army private at the time, had written denouncing a plan for mass deportation drafted by the California chapter of the American Legion, a veterans’ association.  His angry letter prompted close scrutiny of his political views and associations by the bureau that ran on into the early 1970s. The suspicion was that Seeger, who died in early 2014, was a security risk with close connections to the Communist party.  The FBI file on him has nearly 1,800 pages – 90 of them are still withheld for security reasons.  An agent sent out to his Connecticut high school found evidence that he had worn ‘bohemian’ clothes.”

Facebook’s Free Basics Banned In India, Now Shuts Down in Egypt

“Egypt has now become the second country to shut down Facebook’s controversial free internet service after India did the same last week, according to a report from the Associated Press today. The service, called Free Basics, is part of Facebook’s Internet.org initiative that aims to bring internet access to developing nations. Because Free Basics provides access to Facebook and a number of non-Facebook websites at no cost, some regulators and internet activists believe it violates the principles of net neutrality by creating a ‘walled garden’ that prioritizes some sites over others.”
