Isn’t It High Time We Legalize Marijuana?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/acarden_136.jpg

“I am a concerned citizen who is distressed about the erosion of basic liberties, the crime, and the mass incarceration that the drug war has brought us.  As I’ve mentioned before, prohibition is a textbook example of a policy with severe unintended consequences. The prohibition of marijuana and other drugs has produced unintended consequences not at all unlike those that resulted from the prohibition of alcohol in the twentieth century.  As events like Hempfest demonstrate, prohibition has done very little to stop people from getting drugs of all kinds, and it has also done little to prevent the emergence of a thriving community of marijuana enthusiasts.”

U.S. to force companies to disclose if electronic materials come from war-torn countries

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/congorefugees-flickruserbabasteve.jpg

[Truth is for everyone else, naturally.  But where does SEC get this authority?]  “The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) voted Wednesday to force corporations to disclose whether they use minerals like tantalum, tin, gold and tungsten purchased from African conflict zones in and around the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).   So-called ‘conflict minerals’ are seen as fueling much of the fighting in the DRC, with government troops and local militias locked in bitter struggle to control illicit mining operations.”

Ex-NPR Hill reporter: I was lied to daily

“I realized that there is a part of covering Congress, if you’re doing daily coverage, that is actually sort of colluding with the politicians themselves because so much of what I was doing was actually recording and playing what they say or repeating what they say. And I feel like the real story of Congress right now is very much removed from any of that, from the sort of theater of the policy debate in Congress, and it has become such a complete theater that none of it is real. … I feel like I am, as a reporter in the Capitol, lied to every day, all day. There is so little genuine discussion going on with the reporters. … To me, as a reporter, everything is spin.”

Judge: ‘Everything they say is a lie’

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/police_misconduct_header1110.jpg

“A New York judge who says a police officer struck him after apparently mistaking him for a heckler is blasting Queens District Attorney Richard Brown for refusing to prosecute. Judge Thomas Raffaele claims Brown is orchestrating a cover-up and a press release explaining the refusal to prosecute is full of falsehoods, Raffaele told the New York Law Journal. ‘Everything they say is a lie.’  [The judge] said investigators didn’t contact his witnesses until he complained. ‘Given the way the officers lied to cover up what this guy did who hit us, I have to wonder if the same cover-up attitude extends to the detectives in the DA’s office.'”

All Tyranny is Local

“Lubbock County, Texas Judge John Head insists that a tax increase is necessary in order to expand local government operations. In addition to a pay increase for local prosecutors, Head seeks additional funding for the sheriff’s office in order to deal with the prospect of civic unrest if Barack Obama is re-elected.  Whatever Obama’s ambitions might be, the key issue for Lubbock County residents is that Judge Head is demanding more of their money to hire and equip the people who regiment their lives at the local level – which is where the retail business of tyranny is transacted.”

Brandon Raub and the Thought Police

“For nearly a week, Brandon Raub, a former marine, found himself incarcerated against his will in a psychiatric facility for posting political opinions and song lyrics on Facebook. When the government can incarcerate American citizens for merely exercising their First Amendment rights, argues John Whitehead in this week’s vodcast, then we are truly living in frightening times.”

Judge orders release of detained Marine veteran Brandon Raub

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/raub2.jpg

“A Hopewell circuit court judge has ordered that a Marine veteran detained over anti-government Facebook posts be released from a psychiatric hospital.  CBS 6 News’ Catie Beck said the Judge Allan Sharrett dismissed the case Thursday against Brandon Raub. The judge said the original petition for Raub’s detention contained no facts. In other words, there was no information on why Raub was being held — and the judge deemed this violated his civil liberties. Federal agents contend that Facebook posts made by Raub were ‘terrorist in nature.'”

Condi Rice Is Expert At Obscuring Truth

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/thelrcblog-50016.gif

“Condi Rice, like many people who are in high office or have been in high office, knows how to OBSCURE the truth. That is one of their prime means of getting people to accept their machinations. They do this by many rhetorical techniques. They mix lies with supposed facts, with bits of truth, with exaggerations, with fabrications, with outright lies, with misinterpretations, with omissions, with superficial observations, etc.  One example: Condi says Saddam Hussein ‘was an implacable enemy of the United States’. This is a total lie. The U.S. supported Iraq against Iran in their war. The U.S. supplied dual-use technology to Iraq.”

State Department condemns Zimbabwe raids on LGBT rights group

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/photo_1337867840616-1-0-615x345.jpg

[The usual zero-credibility imperial posturing.]  “The United States on Thursday condemned Zimbabwe over raids on the offices of a gay rights group and urged authorities to end a ‘pattern of abuse’ against civil society.  ‘We are deeply concerned when security forces become an instrument of political violence used against citizens exercising their democratic rights. We call upon the government of Zimbabwe to end this pattern of abuse and to eradicate the culture of impunity that allows members of the security sector to continue to violate the rights of the Zimbabwean people,’ she said.”

How the Thought Police Use Your Cell Phone to Track Your Every Move

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/AD_Bill-of-Rights2.gif

“Advanced technology now provides government agents and police officers with the ability to track our every move. The surveillance state is our new society. It is here, and it is spying on you, your family and your friends every day. Worse yet, those in control are using life’s little conveniences, namely cell phones, to do much of the spying. And worst of all, the corporations who produce these little conveniences are happy to hand your personal information over to the police so long as their profit margins increase. To put it simply, the corporate-surveillance state is in full effect, and there is nowhere to hide.”
