DOJ Creates New Position To Target “Anti-Government Views”

“‘Americans motivated by anti-government views and racist ideologies’ will be the focus of a new Department of Justice position, John Carlin told a George Washington University crowd today.  The new ‘Domestic Terrorism Counsel’ will work with US attorneys nationwide ‘to identify trends that can be used to help shape a national strategy.’  This latest move from the fear-mongering Department of Justice essentially enshrines homegrown paranoia about imagined enemies. It also serves to justify the further expansion of the military-industrial-surveillance complex into the lives of American citizens on American soil … especially dissenting ones.”

FBI Director Blames Citizens with Cameras for Increase in Homicides

“Claimed FBI Director James B. Comey, police are now afraid to do their jobs for fear of becoming the next viral sensation.  Comey made his remarks Friday to hundreds of students at the University of Chicago Law School, claiming that he had reached this consensus after speaking with several police chiefs who were too afraid to go on the record.  The agency that oversees the largest surveillance program in the United States, telling us that if we have nothing to hide, we should have nothing to fear, [opposes] citizens exercising their First Amendment rights to record police.”

W.H.O. lists bacon alongside cigarettes, asbestos as carcinogens

“The WHO is set to list beef, bacon and sausage alongside cigarettes and asbestos as cancer causing agents, the Daily Mail reported this week.  The publication said the health body is expected to go further than most scientific studies, by saying processed meat actually causes cancer.  According to the report, the decision is due on Monday, and comes on the heels of a meeting of scientists from ten different countries that reviewed a broad array of data.”

The Future Is Unimaginably Better than Expected

“Today’s televisions are far superior to the ones shown in the film. Video calling is cheaper and easier than predicted, with apps like Skype and FaceTime. Virtual reality is not yet mainstream, but it may soon be, and we already have plenty of wearable tech such as Google Glass. We don’t have fax machines in every room because we have a far cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly alternative in email. Nobody can predict the future, not even sci-fi screenwriters who are paid lots of money to try. [..] Entrepreneurs respond to our wants and needs today, but they also tap into our latent demands — creating amazing new stuff we didn’t even know we wanted.”

Meet the Human Smugglers

“To write Human Smuggling and Border Crossings (Routledge 2015), Gabriella Sanchez interviewed a large sample of human smugglers in Arizona. The result is a fascinating ethnography. [..] Most respondents did not consider any part of their involvement in smuggling to be deviant or criminal. They perceived the provision of these services as benevolent acts conducted on behalf of friends and family.  [..]  Most smuggling activities surveyed in this sample generated returns in the range of US$50 to US$200 to those who performed them.”

He Volunteered to Go to Auschwitz

“Are you wondering why you’ve never heard of this man before?  For decades, information about Pilecki was kept hidden by the leaders of the postwar, Soviet-installed regime. They couldn’t recount his anti-Nazi activities without completing the story and telling of his anticommunist work as well. With the release in recent years of previously classified or suppressed documents, including Pilecki’s own reports in their entirety, his superhuman exploits are finally becoming known around the world.”

Millennials Don’t Trust Uncle Sam, and That’s Good

“The millennials’ low confidence in every branch of government reflects the fact that public policies not only fail to achieve their stated objectives, but directly undermine what matters to them most.  Perhaps millennials are more skeptical of government surveillance and other programs than previous generations because reports and data like that are so readily available. Maybe it’s because they are a generation of digital natives. Growing up immersed in technology, they seem more immune than their elders to cyber scare tactics.  Whatever the reason, one thing is clear. Millennials won’t let people—in the government or otherwise—step on their toes without justification.”

No More “Free Trade” Treaties: It’s Time for Genuine Free Trade

“In 2012 we endured a fresh attempt by our governments to reduce our freedom to create and share intellectual works with the ACTA. And, if we look at the negotiations mandates of these trade agreements, we can see they all include a chapter on the reinforcement of ‘intellectual property’ rights. Intellectual property has become a key concept of the international economy. But this must not hide its illegitimacy.  Each time a new ‘free trade’ treaty is enacted, what is seen is the attenuation of tariff barriers, but what is not seen is the sneaky proliferation and harmonization of non-tariff barriers impeding free enterprise and creating monopolies at an international scale.”

Wikileaks release of TPP deal text stokes ‘freedom of expression’ fears

“TPP was negotiated in secret and details have yet to be published.  One chapter appears to give the signatory countries (referred to as ‘parties’) greater power to stop embarrassing information going public. The treaty would give signatories the ability to curtail legal proceedings if the theft of information is ‘detrimental to a party’s economic interests, international relations, or national defense or national security’ – in other words, presumably, if a trial would cause the information to spread. The rules also state that every country has the authority to immediately give the name and address of anyone importing detained goods to whoever owns the intellectual property.”

UN denies Richard Branson’s claim it will call for drug decriminalisation

“Branson said he and his colleagues on the drugs policy commission could not be more delighted at the move, given that he had argued for years that drug use should be treated as a health issue rather than a crime.  Within hours of his claim, however, UNODC made it clear that no such change in policy was imminent and said it regretted an ‘unfortunate misunderstanding’. Branson appears to have anticipated that the UN body would not back a global decriminalisation call. ‘As I’m writing this I am hearing that at least one government is putting an inordinate amount of pressure on the UNODC.'”
