Russia Bans the Internet Archive’s ‘Wayback Machine’

“The Russian government has blocked the Internet Archive, the San-Francisco-based website that provides the popular Wayback Machine, which allows users to view archived webpages. The decision to ban the Internet Archive appears to be the work of Russia’s Attorney General, meaning that police determined that the website contains extremist content. Because the Internet Archive uses https, some Russian ISPs will have to block the entire website in order to comply with the blacklisting, since encrypted traffic won’t allow them to differentiate between different pages of the same site.”

Amazon Bans Confederate Flags, Still Sells Nazi Merchandise

“Online retail giant Amazon’s Monday decision to ban the sale of merchandise depicting the Confederate flag has many Americans scratching their heads, as a quick review of Amazon’s site reveals the company still sells Nazi flags.  For just $7.35, Amazon shoppers can pick up this Nazi SS flag, depicting the symbol of Adolf Hitler’s ‘Schutzstaffel’ who helped carry out Germany’s annihilation of 6,000,000 Jews during the Holocaust. Coffee drinkers may instead prefer this ‘#hitler’ mug, which comes in several styles and colors, now available for $20.99 with free shipping.”

What It’s Like to Be Declared Dead by the Government

“It is estimated that every year, some 12,200 very much alive U.S. citizens are declared dead by the Social Security Administration due to ‘keystroke errors.’ Those affected quite literally become a walking dead, unable to secure a job, make financial transactions, file taxes, or visit the doctor — and for months on end, must endure the nightmare of convincing a large bureaucracy that they haven’t yet bit the dust. An 83-year-old woman whose SSA checks were discontinued, and who was unable to purchase vital medications; A man who was fired from his job after a medical thief ‘left drug addiction and narcotic medications in his records’.”

John Hussman: All Their Eggs in Janet’s Basket

“Investors whose strategy is to follow the Fed – in the belief that stocks will advance as long as the Fed does not raise interest rates – are free to place all their eggs in Janet’s basket. On the other hand, for investors whose strategy is historically informed by factors that have reliably distinguished market advances from collapses over a century of history, our suggestion is to consider a stronger defense. Our greatest successes have been when our investment outlook was aligned with valuations and market internals, and our greatest disappointments have been when it was not. Both factors are unfavorable at present, and our outlook is aligned accordingly.

Feds can file criminal charges if you clear your browser history

“The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is largely related to corporate financial reporting, but one section, Section 802, imposes severe penalties for ‘destroying, mutilating, concealing, falsifying records, documents, or tangible objects’ with intent to impede or stall a federal investigation. Its vague and far-reaching rhetoric allows it to be applied to even non-tangible, personal information like stored records of online activity. uch broad interpretation of a law that was originally meant to apply to large corporations highlights already simmering questions of what the federal government’s access to citizens’ data should actually look like.”

Bay Area Farm-To-Table And Legal Cannabis Movements Come Together

“Drawing inspiration from the farmer’s market model, Flow Kana partners with organic, sun-grown cannabis growers. Their platform enables users with medical marijuana cards to select desired strains and have 1/8 oz. of ‘connoisseur grade’ marijuana delivered within thirty minutes for approximately $50. This model not only eliminates middlemen dispensaries, but also flips the economics of the industry. Farmers that were once at the mercy of dispensary rates can engage in a direct-trade business model similar to that of the direct-trade coffee movement.  It plans to deploy the platform to the rest of the Bay Area and to all major, California cities by the end of 2015.”

Trans Pacific Partnership Is about Control, Not Free Trade

“The TPP would only marginally improve free trade, but would export to other countries stronger copyright and patent standards, which would increase the costs these monopoly privilege systems impose on economies, reduce Internet and artistic freedom, increase the prices of pharmaceuticals, and reduce innovation.  Another perverse aspect of the IP treaties is that any significant improvement to US copyright law, which is widely seen as being out of control and in need of reform, would arguably be in violation of US obligations under the Berne Convention. So Congress ties its own hands by means of international agreements and then uses this as an excuse later for why IP reform is not possible.”

Icelanders Protest in Their Thousands as Parliament Sealed Off

“Icelanders protested in their thousands outside the parliament as police sealed off the building with steel fencing to protect lawmakers trying to finish the winter session and suspend for the summer break.  Police estimate that about 2,000 people gathered outside the Reykjavik-based legislature late on Tuesday, waving banners and demanding that the government step down.  The protest organizers, who arranged the event through Facebook, listed ’99 reasons for a revolution’ to attract people to their cause. The demonstration comes amid demands for pay increases as high as 50% in some industries as unions threaten employers with strikes affecting up to one-third of the labor force.”

Millions in Brazil Follow a Teen Leader to Freedom

“The catalyzing events behind Brazil’s freedom movement are high taxes, massive corruption and cronyism, rising price inflation amid a sluggish economy, and the widely perceived incompetence of President Dilma Rousseff and her socialist-leaning Workers’ Party.  It gained significant attention on June 1 when it organized a campaign against taxes that make up 60 percent of the price of beer. And though no political party in Brazil has been committed to liberty since the 19th century, one is now in the making. The Novo (‘New’) Party has gathered the signatures necessary for the next step: certification by the government so it can field candidates in elections.”

Student changes name by deed poll to avoid £220 Ryanair admin fee

“A student has changed his name by deed poll because it was cheaper than paying a ‘ridiculous’ Ryanair charge for a booking error.  Adam Armstrong, 19, was presented with a £220 administration fee after his girlfriend’s stepfather mistakenly reserved a seat to Ibiza for him with the budget airline under the surname of West. Armstrong, who is studying for a foundation degree in digital marketing at Leeds City College, changed his name to West for free and drove to Liverpool to rush through a new passport for £103.  Several airlines charge more than £100 to make minor changes to bookings as highlighted by the Guardian in the past.”
