NSA pushed 9/11 as key ‘sound bite’ to justify surveillance

“The National Security Agency advised its officials to cite the 9/11 attacks as justification for its mass surveillance activities, according to a master list of NSA talking points.  The document, obtained by Al Jazeera through a Freedom of Information Act request, contains talking points and suggested statements for NSA officials (PDF) responding to the fallout from media revelations that originated with former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Invoking the events of 9/11 to justify the controversial NSA programs, which have caused major diplomatic fallout around the world, was the top item on the talking points that agency officials were encouraged to use.”

NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide

“According to a top-secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, the NSA’s acquisitions directorate sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency’s headquarters at Fort Meade, Md. The NSA’s principal tool to exploit the data links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency’s British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters . From undisclosed interception points, the NSA and the GCHQ are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants.”

Living in your basement, you have no rent and no employees, and since you’re selling your skills you don’t need venture capita yet, but you’re still dreaming big. Swiss bankers stay home amid US global tax evasion manhunt

“As a US hunt for tax evaders and their accomplices gains momentum, many Swiss bankers are afraid to go abroad for fear of arrest, one business leader said.  ‘In my opinion, some 1,000 Swiss bankers no longer dare to go to the United States, or even travel abroad,’ Martin Naville, the head of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, was quoted as saying.  Swiss banks and industry representatives are increasingly cautioning bankers who have worked with US clients to refrain from travelling outside Switzerland. The long-time tax haven’s banks are believed to have accepted tens of billions of undeclared dollars from US citizens, though they now refuse such money.”

Introducing Islamic Financial Futurist David Cameron!

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“In the case of the United Arab Emirates, at least Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the bankers are in for the long haul. They’re patient fellows. Dubai – built on the shifting sands of a desert – will rise again. Qatar is another one, by the way. This stamp-size country was tapped to ‘own’ the Middle East’s biggest Westernized media franchise – Al Jazeera – and now it’s getting ready to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The bankers like these funny little countries. They can do what they want with them, and right now they’re building them up. Want a big salary? Take a trip over to the Middle East, find a tiny territory in the middle of a Western building boom and settle down.”

PayPal’s Beacon: Bluetooth LE Hands-Free Check Ins And Payments

“One of David Marcus’s biggest challenges when taking on the role of President of PayPal was extending the platform into point of sale, and making it easier to pay with PayPal than swiping your credit card. But changing consumer behavior is an enormously difficult task. So he thought that the only thing more alluring than swiping a card is simply doing nothing when you check out of a store. Today the company is one step closer to making this a reality. PayPal is debuting Beacon, a new add-on hardware device for merchants that leverages bluetooth technology to enable consumers to pay at stores completely hands-free.”

Peter Surda Talks About The Economics Of Bitcoin – Deflation

“Since Bitcoin is a technology that enables a new type of currency never seen before (a digital currency that behaves like a commodity currency) traditional economic schools, even Austrian, don’t really have yet the theoretical framework to explain it. This is why the contributions and research around Bitcoin of Peter Surda, arguably the first Bitcoin economist, are a must to understand the digital currency and its prospects for the future.  In this interview Peter talked about some of his findings, research, and opinions about Bitcoin.”

Dutch Banking Malware Gang Busted: Bitcoin’s Role

“Dutch cybercrime police last week busted four men on charges that they used the banking malware known as TorRAT to steal an estimated $1.4 million from consumers.  The Dutch gang allegedly laundered money through Bitcoin transactions and even set up their own Bitcoin exchange service — FBTC Exchange — that went dark after the arrests. The Dutch investigation also resulted in police seizing from the TorRAT gang 56 Bitcoins, which authorities exchanged for over 7,700 euros ($10,000).  While authorities haven’t revealed what tipped them off, the FBI may have shared the real IP addresses of the alleged Tor Mail-using TorRAT gang members with Dutch police.”

Obama Administration Uses Pirated Code on Healthcare.gov

“The new Obamacare website Healthcare.gov has had its fair share of problems over the past weeks, and the trouble continues.  As it turns out, the Government website uses the open source softwareDataTables, which is a plug-in for the jQuery Javascript library. While using open-source software is fine, the makers of Healthcare.gov decided to blatantly remove all references to its owners or the original copyright license.  In other words, they simply took the open-source software and are passing it off as their own, a clear violation of the GPL v2 and BSD (3-point) licenses DataTables uses.”
