Robert Ringer: The Illusion of Misfortune

rringer-11

“People often misread an event or circumstance as an adversity or setback.  The problem is that we tend to judge events on the basis of their immediate impact, but, as life repeatedly teaches us, the long-term consequences of an action can be quite different from what we initially observe.  The bad is superficial and obvious; the good often takes investigation and long-term observation.  It’s important to recognize that the true result of an event may take a long period of time to come to fruition.  Thus, misfortune and setbacks are frequently nothing more than illusions, which is why we so often fail to connect the long-term benefits to the seemingly negative situation that confronts us.”

The Strongest Asset Protection Laws in the US

“In the first decision, the court declared that it didn’t have jurisdiction to force a Florida man on the wrong side of a $29 million judgment to turn over stock in companies organized in the Bahamas, the Netherlands, Jordan, the Isle of Man, and the Dominican Republic. It was especially concerned about the practical implications of permitting Florida courts to issue turnover orders for assets located outside the state. After all, creditors outside Florida might have claims against the same assets.  The second debtor-friendly decision followed a few days later. Here, the Court of Appeals ruled that Florida courts have no authority to appoint a ‘receiver’ over an out-of-state corporation.”

NATO: No Sign Russian Troops Are Pulling Back From Ukraine

“The Russian ministry said Mr. Shoigu had told Mr. Hagel to ‘turn down the rhetoric,’ while the Pentagon said Mr. Hagel had ‘repeated his call for an end to Russia’s destabilizing influence inside Ukraine.’  The NATO official said the alliance continued to urge Russia ‘to pull back all its troops along the Ukrainian border in favor of diplomacy and dialogue.’  Six Canadian F-18 fighters are due to arrive shortly in Romania, while four French Rafale jets have arrived in Poland. Four British Typhoon jets and Four Polish MiG-29s are due to take over Baltic air patrolling tomorrow from a U.S. contingent of 10 F-15s, while Denmark is sending four F-16s to Estonia.”

US troops arrive in Poland, Latvia for ‘drills’

“The first two waves of US troops have arrived in Poland and Latvia to begin military drills ‘promoting peace and stability’ across Eastern Europe. Tensions continue to mount in the region, as Ukraine teeters on the brink of a civil war.  A contingent of 150 American soldiers arrived in the Polish town of Swidwin on Thursday. Later in the evening another 150 US troops arrived in Riga, Latvian defence ministry confirmed. The two groups will be shortly joined by another 300 troops.  The soldiers will participate in military exercises in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia over the next three months, with a view to reassuring NATO allies in the region.”

Police Chief Caught On Video Assaulting Shackled Inmate

“The town of Erick is looking for a new police chief following the chief’s arrest on assault and battery charges.  Mike Day resigned last week. Day is accused of assaulting a shackled inmate at the Beckham County Detention Center in December of 2013.  Day arrested Arturo Gonzales and Mark Watson, then Watson and Day exchanged words at the detention center.  Surveillance video showed Day walk over to Watson, Watson stood up and Beckham County Sheriff Scott Jay said that is when Day assaulted the restrained inmate.  The sheriff said Watson’s hands remain at his waist the whole time, and he does not see any aggressive action from Watson.”

Study: At least 4.1% of U.S. death row defendants are innocent

“The high rate of exoneration among death-sentenced defendants appears to be driven by the threat of execution, but most death-sentenced defendants are removed from death row and resentenced to life imprisonment, after which the likelihood of exoneration drops sharply. We use survival analysis to model this effect, and estimate that if all death-sentenced defendants remained under sentence of death indefinitely, at least 4.1% would be exonerated. We conclude that this is a conservative estimate of the proportion of false conviction among death sentences in the United States.”

More Renounce US Citizenship but Deny Stereotype

“Renouncers — whose ranks have swelled more than five-fold from a decade ago — often contradict the stereotype of the financial scoundrel. Many are from very ordinary economic circumstances.  Some call themselves ‘accidental Americans,’ who recall little of life in the U.S., but long ago happened to be born in it. In recent years, federal officials have stepped up pursuit of potential tax evaders, using the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. Those trying to comply complain of costly fees for accountants and lawyers, having to report the income of non-American spouses, and decisions by some European banks to close accounts of U.S. citizens or deny them loans.”

US Grants Itself the Right to Demand Online Data Stored Overseas

“Internet service providers are now obliged to turn over customer emails and other digital content demanded by the US government through search warrants even when the information is stored overseas.   Basically, the United States can now bypass individual laws given by the world’s governments and any efforts to safeguard information from the prying eyes of the NSA by storing data outside the United States.  The reasoning behind this decision is that it would just take too long for US agencies to coordinate efforts with foreign governments to obtain the desired data.  The decision comes as Microsoft challenged a warrant allowing a search of content of email stored overseas.”

Why the housing sector won’t save the broader economy

“[The Princeton professors] point out that house-price growth during the last two years was actually a bit better than between 2004 and 2006. But cash-out refinancing volume is way down, as is the building of new units.  ‘Dreadful new home sales data yesterday heightened concerns that house-price growth will stall, but we are making a different point: the sensitivity of economic activity to rising house prices is much lower today than it was prior to the Great Recession,’ they say. ‘This is due to a number of factors, such as the rise in investor purchases and the fact that the households who would be most likely to spend out of housing wealth are no longer homeowners.'”

City of Imagination: Kowloon Walled City 20 Years Later

“The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was once the densest place on earth, a virtually lawless labyrinth of crime, grime, commerce and hope. A Wall Street Journal documentary tracks its colorful legacy and brings the place alive 20 years later.”
