Arkansas to vote on legalizing medical marijuana in November

“A measure that would legalize medical marijuana in Arkansas has qualified for the November ballot, according to the Associated Press. Arkansans for Compassionate Care delivered more than a dozen boxes to the Secretary of State last month, which contained petitions with 67,885 signatures. The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act would allow up to 30 medical marijuana dispensaries to open in Arkansas and let patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. Cities and counties would be able to ban marijuana dispensaries under the law.”

“In 2006, 44-year-old Mount Washington, Kentucky resident Walter Nix was found guilty of sexually abusing a teenager named Louise Ogborn. Posing as a police officer, a con man named David Stewart called the McDonald’s where Nix and Ogburn worked and ordered Nix to strip-search the teenage girl. Nix was sentenced to five years in prison. Donna Summers, who managed the McDonald’s, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful imprisonment. David Stewart, a former prison guard who allegedly perpetrated dozens of similar hoaxes over more than a decade, was never prosecuted.”

“The Malheur County, Oregon Sheriff’s Department casually announced that it had found several small marijuana gardens during a two-week aerial surveillance operation conducted with the help of the National Guard. At this point an actual journalist would have asked Wolfe why his office was conducting warrantless aerial searches of private property without probable cause. After all, the Sheriff has admitted that none of the property owners was a criminal suspect. Sheriff Wolfe insists this is necessary to ‘protect the public,’ which is more acutely threatened by the unconstitutional, paramilitary operations of his own department.”

“Unicor is a government-run enterprise that employs over 13,000 inmates — at wages as low as 23 cents an hour — to make goods for the Pentagon and other federal agencies. With some exceptions, Unicor gets first dibs on federal contracts over private companies as long as its bid is comparable in price, quantity and delivery. In other words: If Unicor wants a contract, it gets it. And that makes Wilson and other small business owners angry. Unicor is not required to pay its workers minimum wage and instead pays inmates 23 cents to $1.15 an hour. It doesn’t have health insurance costs. It also doesn’t shell out federal, state or local taxes.”

Federal Reserve leaning toward more stimulus

“Fed members discussed the merits of different approaches to sparking more drive in the economy, from signalling that they would keep their benchmark interest rate at the current all-time low longer than currently understood, to undertaking more bond purchases aimed at pulling long-term interest rates down further. Some said that a new Fed program to purchase Treasury and other bonds, pressing down their yields, ‘might boost business and consumer confidence’. In the end, the FOMC put off any new action, but the minutes show the policy makers closer to moving on a new stimulus plan at their next meeting on September 12-13.”

US teen invents advanced cancer test using Google

“Jack Andraka has created a pancreatic cancer test that is 168 times faster and considerably cheaper than the gold standard in the field. He has applied for a patent for his test and is now carrying out further research at Johns Hopkins University in the US city of Baltimore. And he did it by using Google. The Maryland native, who won $75,000 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May for his creation, cites search engines and free online science papers as the tools that allowed him to create the test, and said the idea came to him when he was ‘chilling out in biology class’.”
