Musharraf says blasphemy law cannot be changed (2011)

“Former president Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws could not be changed, but that the man who killed the governor of Punjab province over his opposition to them must be punished.  Musharraf said that, rather than amend the laws, Pakistan needed to find ways to make sure they were not misused.  Musharraf was criticized by Washington for failing to crack down harder on the Taliban when he was in power [2001-2008].”

U.S. financial aid to Pakistan since the September 11, 2001 attacks

“Between 2002-2010, Pakistan received approximately $18 billion in military and economic aid from the United States. In February 2010, the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama requested an additional $3 billion in aid, for a total of $20.7 billion.  A significant proportion of U.S. economic aid for Pakistan has ended up in back in the U.S., as funds are channeled through large U.S. contractors. A U.S. lawmaker also said the majority of U.S. economic aid has not left the U.S. as it was spent on consulting fees and overhead cost.”

11-year-old Pakistani girl faces death penalty for Quran burning

“An 11-year-old Christian Pakistani girl said to suffer from a mental disorder could face the death penalty under the country’s notorious blasphemy laws, after she was accused by her neighbours of deliberately burning sacred Islamic texts. As communal tensions continued to rise, around 900 Christians living on the outskirts of Islamabad have been ordered to leave a neighbourhood where they have lived for almost two decades.”

“The American people should reject the hype about so called defense ‘cuts’ from both side of the political spectrum. When the Obama administration calls for an 18% increase in 2013 military spending, those who propose a 20% increase portray this as a reduction!   Even the supposedly draconian cuts called for in the ‘sequestration’ budget bill would keep military spending at 2006 levels when adjusted for inflation, which is about as high in terms of GDP as during World War II. It’s also more than the top 13 foreign countries spend on defense combined.  Is there any amount of money that would satisfy the Pentagon hawks?”

And it would seem we are likely headed for war as the conditions he cited have already been met.   Chemical stockpiles are already being moved and it has been widely reported.  Additionally, what would the ‘wrong hands’ for possession of chemical weapons in Syria be? They are clearly already in the wrong hands. And the waiting hands belong to al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, key powers in the opposition forces.”

A report of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs concluded that the U.S. under the successive presidential administrations sold materials including anthrax and botulism to Iraq right up until March 1992. According to several former officials, the State and Commerce departments promoted trade in such items as a way to boost U.S. exports and acquire political leverage over Hussein.”
