“This is a nice PBS video which is a pilot for an upcoming series titled ‘Food Forward.’ This documentary explores the explosion of urban agriculture (especially in NY, Milwaukee, and Detroit) and interviews the ‘food rebels’ who make things happen, even if on a very small scale. The documentary looks at community gardens as an alternative to the industrial-supplied grocery stores. The last portion of the video visits the anarcho-urban agriculture revolution in my city, Detroit.”

Philadelphia woman faces $600-a-day fine for feeding needy neighborhood kids

“A Pennsylvania woman who offers free lunch every day to low-income children in her neighborhood faces a $600-a-day fine next summer if she continues because she did not clear the food giveaway with township officials.  Chester Township, which has a per capita income of $19,000 a year, says Prattis lives in a residential zone, hence handing out food to children is not allowed. The township says she needs to go before a zoning board to ask for a variance, which would cost her up to $1,000 in administrative fees.”

Sauerkraut Freedom

“Sandy Boyce’s ‘kraut was a hit, selling out each week — until her county health department promptly asked her to stop. Without testing her product, obtaining a food processing license, and making it all at within a certified commercial kitchen, Boyce couldn’t distribute her sauerkraut to the public according to state regulations.  In order to get around the health department regulations, Boyce began to label her sauerkraut as ‘pet food.’   But after the season ended, she received another stopping order — this time a cease-and-desist letter from the Arizona Department of Agriculture for selling animal feed without a license.”

Virginia vintners taste the police state

“The winery ordinance passed under the pretext that it protects the health, safety and welfare of the public. It forces wineries to close at 6 p.m. and prohibits sale of food unless the wineries obtain special permits from the zoning administrator.  The ordinance lists prohibited winery activities such as hot air balloon rides, farmers’ markets, and mini-golf. Among the prohibited activities, the ordinance includes anything else determined by the zoning administrator ‘to be similar in nature or in impact to’ the listed activities. That’s the equivalent allowing police officers to ticket drivers for nearly anything they wish.”

“In debt crisis-stricken Europe, household gold supplies dry up after record prices and a deepening recession prompted a proliferation of places to exchange the metal for money.  In Portugal, the historical home of some of Europe’s biggest gold reserves, the number of jewelry stores, which include cash-for-gold shops, increased 29 percent in 2011 from a year earlier, a study commissioned by parliament found. In the first quarter, an average of two new stores opened every day, the report said. Now some of them are closing.”
