Chicago City Council approves police torture settlement

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/newsletter1.gif

“Beginning in the early 1980s, former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge and a gang of detectives tortured dozens of innocent African American men, forcing false confessions of crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder.  Known as ‘the torture crew,’ Burge and his men intimidated, beat, electrocuted, burned, and genitally mutilated men into falsely confessing crimes for which many spent decades in prison. Yet as case after case continues to be overturned, the City council, Mayor Ram Emanuel, and Richard Daley still refuse to apologize—or even accept responsibility for—these atrocities.”

Tampa police demonstrate RNC crowd control techniques

“Police donned riot gear, rolled out an armored truck and issued a booming announcement from a loudspeaker Thursday.  ‘This has been declared an unlawful assembly,’ a man’s voice said. ‘You have 10 minutes to disperse from the area.’  Faux protesters continued to pelt objects at police and ram their bodies against the officers’ bicycles. Police responded in force. Tampa police said that if downtown visitors see officers in riot gear walking around, it doesn’t mean police are expecting a problem.  Tampa police say they hope they won’t have to use their SWAT equipment and training.”

Criminalizing Photography

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/20120813-lens-platt-slide-Y0U9-articleInline3.jpg

“What we’re seeing is photographers being charged with disorderly conduct, trespass and obstruction of governmental administration for doing their job. I call it the catch and release program. Almost always the D.A. will drop the charges immediately. But in the meantime, the police have managed to stop the person from photographing.  It’s not just news photographers who should be concerned with this. Tourists taking pictures are being told by police, security guards and sometimes other citizens, ‘Sorry, you can’t take a picture here.’ When asked why, they say, ‘Well, don’t you remember 9/11?'”

Texas teacher facing prison after sex with 5 students

“After having sex with five 18-year-old students at her home, a former Texas high school teacher was convicted Friday of 16 counts of having an inappropriate relationship between a student and teacher. The second-degree felony is punishable by two to 20 years in prison per count.  Colleps is married and has three children. She turned herself in after a cellphone video of one encounter that involved multiple students emerged. Three former students who testified Thursday said that they did not consider themselves victims and did not want to see their former English teacher prosecuted.”

New Security Device Put To Use In Edmond Schools

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/19299208_BG11.jpg

“The device is called the Lobby Guard. It’s a new electronic system that scans visitors’ ID’s, then runs background checks to make sure you are supposed to be there.  Once you scan your ID the system checks the software to see if you’re a sex offender or court ordered to stay away. No alarms go off, but it instantly notifies the district and security that someone who’s not supposed to be around the kids is in the building.”

Contra Costa’s $45 million computer health care system endangering lives, nurses say

“A new medical computer system used at Contra Costa correctional facilities recommended what could have been a fatal dose of a West County Jail inmate’s heart medication last week, an incident that a detention nurse characterized Tuesday as one of many recent close calls with the month-old program.  The $45 million EPIC system integrates detention medical records with the other arms of the county health system. The system led to 142 nursing complaints in July.”

Why Progressive defended a client’s killer

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/120816055035-n-progressive-insurance-social-media-00002927-video-111.jpg

“Katie died in a 2010 crash after another driver ran a red light. The driver was underinsured, and Fisher’s family had to sue the driver for negligence in order to force Katie’s insurance company, Progressive, to pay the difference.  What really irked Fisher was that Progressive actively participated in the other driver’s legal defense. His scathing post about the debacle quickly went viral and turned into a social media nightmare for Progressive.   The company defended its decision: ‘Under Maryland law, in order to receive the benefits of an underinsured driver claim, the other driver must be at fault.'”

Cab drivers irate as ban against livery app reversed

“With a few taps of an app called Uber, users can summon a hired car without needing to find a taxicab. The service is catching on in cities across the country.  Since Uber launched locally, cab operators have complained that it creates unfair competition because it dispatches cars that are not regulated the way taxis are. And earlier this month, the state ordered Uber to shut down in Massachusetts, saying officials had not approved its system for calculating fares.  State officials reversed the ban Wednesday, allowing Uber to continue operating here, but cabbies are not giving up the fight.”

Labor Dept. Attempts to Stop Layoffs by Giving $100 Million to States to Subsidize Payrolls

“The Labor Department announced on Monday that it will be awarding almost $100 million in grant funding to states to prevent layoffs by allowing businesses to pay employees as part-time workers and the federal government will pick up the tab for the cost of a full-time paycheck.  The ‘work-sharing’ program was passed as part of a Republican-led bill in the House, H.R. 3630.”
