“A federal appeals court on Wednesday said the authorities do not need a probable-cause warrant to track a suspect’s every move via GPS signals from a suspect’s mobile phone. The decision, a big boost for the government’s surveillance powers, comes as prosecutors are shifting their focus to warrantless cell-tower location tracking of suspects. The court of appeals ruling comes a month after a congressional inquiry found that law enforcement made 1.3 million requests for cellphone data last year alone while seeking out subscriber information like text messages, location data and calling records.”

Clinton considers blacklisting Pakistan-linked group

“The US State Department on Tuesday voiced concern about the Pakistan-linked Haqqani network and said it was studying whether to designate the group as terrorists after strong appeals by Congress. He is a good guy now, says the Treasury: ‘The U.S. Department of the Treasury today is lifting sanctions against former Prime Minister of Syria Riyad Hijab who recently severed his ties with the Assad regime. This action is being taken because Hijab is no longer a senior official of the Government of Syria. Hijab’s name will be removed from Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) and Blocked Persons List, and he is no longer subject to an asset freeze.'”

KFC and Pizza Hut closed in Nepal as staff threatens to kill branch managers

“Devyani International, which operates outlets of KFC and Pizza Hut in Nepal and neighbouring India, wrote a letter to authorities announcing the immediate closure of its eateries in the capital Kathmandu. KFC and Pizza Hut, Nepal’s only international fast-food chains, opened their first branches in the country three years ago, generating long queues of locals wanting to sample international cuisine. DreamWorks plans $3.2 billion China tourist attraction

“DreamWorks Animation on Tuesday said it plans to build a $3.2 billion ‘entertainment zone’ in Shanghai, as the US film giant seeks to bolster its presence in the booming Chinese market. The project — called the Dream Center — will comprise entertainment facilities, animation exhibitions and commercial developments including hotels and shopping areas in Shanghai’s Xuhui district, it said. The announcement comes after US entertainment giant Disney last year broke ground on a planned $3.7 billion theme park in Shanghai, scheduled to open in 2015.”

“I don’t have time for a sit-down dinner so I head into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that is absolutely packed with customers for an Old Beijing Twister — a wrap modeled after the way Peking duck is served, but with fried chicken, spring onions and hoisin sauce. I stick out like a sore thumb when I’m in China. I’d like to think it is my camera hanging around my neck that gives me away as a tourist, but the truth is that I’m just too darn fat to be mistaken for a local. That’s OK because the Chinese are very friendly people who love to practice their English on willing Americans.”

On some days, Beijing is enveloped in a brownish-grey smog, so thick it gets indoors, stings the eyes and darkens the sky in the middle of the day. Missing Cameroon athletes may be looking for ‘greener pastures’

“The seven missing in London. That’s what the headlines in the West African nation of Cameroon call the athletes who walked away from the Olympic village at the London Games. While the Cameroon Olympic delegation has stopped short of saying the athletes planned to defect, at least one member of the country’s national Olympic committee believes it’s more than likely. Since the 1996 Games in Atlanta, dozens of athletes from Cameroon have defected. Cameroon, with a population of about 20 million, is one of the world’s poorest nations, according to the International Monetary Fund.”

Argentina imposes more restrictions on U.S. dollars

“Argentina has imposed another restriction on the sale of US dollars, barring travelers from purchasing them unless the dollar is the currency of their destination, the government said Monday. Argentine authorities have been pressing ahead with their policy of tightening currency controls to try to stem capital flight and protect foreign exchange reserves. The fight against the dollarization of the economy led to severe restrictions for banks, companies and small savers seeking to cope with inflation, which stands at 25 percent, according to independent analysts. The government says inflation is just 10 percent.”
