“Nacht und Nebel, German for “Night and Fog” was a directive of Adolf Hitler on 7 December 1941 that was originally intended to winnow out all political activists and resistance ‘helpers’, ‘anyone endangering German security’ throughout Nazi Germany‘s occupied territories.  Until the decree, prisoners from Western Europe were handled by German soldiers according to national agreements and procedures such as the Geneva Convention. Hitler and his upper level staff, however, made a critical decision not to have to conform to what they considered unnecessary rules.”

Emergency Powers Spell Corrosion of Liberty and Safety

“Last week President Obama quietly signed Executive Order 13618, which provides the Department of Homeland Security with emergency powers over civilian telecommunications, including private telephone, cellular, and wireless networks. Critics of Obama’s extension of these emergency powers over private communications networks are referred to the 1934 Communications Act, which authorizes the president to ’cause the closing of any facility or station for wire communication’ and gives him ‘control of any such facility or station’ if a state of war — or the threat of one — exists.”

Federal Judge Strikes Down Utah’s Hairbraiding Licensing Scheme

“A federal court ruled late yesterday that Utah’s requirement that hairbraiders have a government-issued cosmetology license is unconstitutional.  Under Utah law, Jestina Clayton could not be paid to braid hair unless she first spent thousands of dollars on 2,000 hours—one full year—of government-mandated cosmetology training.  But Utah never considered African hair braiding when creating its licensing scheme and has never investigated whether African hair braiding is a threat to public health or safety.”

“Ryan sold stock in Wachovia and Citigroup on the same day he attended a confidential meeting where top level officials disclosed the sector was heading for a deep crisis. Not long after the meeting, Wachovia’s and Citigroup’s share prices fell. Most interesting, though, Ryan bought shares that day in Goldman Sachs.  Goldman stock climbed by more than 40% from its low on the 18th to its closing price on the 19th. Just 4 days later Warren Buffett plowed billions into the company.  On October 3, 2008, Ryan voted for TARP, which resulted in even more money being pumped into Goldman.  Goldman Sachs is now among his largest financial supporters.”

$11 Trillion Increase in Federal Debt in One Year

“The unfunded liabilities of the U.S. government grew in one year by $11 trillion, says Prof. Lawrence Kotlikoff of Boston University. He is using figures provided by the Congressional Budget Office.  Republicans and Democrats in Congress a year ago could not figure ways to cut $210 billion a year for a decade. Meanwhile, the real debt grew by $11 trillion.  Understand, this is the present value of the gap. It’s not that, over the next 75 years, there will be $11 trillion more debt. It is that the present value of the entire gap is $11 trillion. We need $11 trillion today, invested in high-return capital.”

Sterilization Won’t Cost Women A Penny Under Obamacare

“A new regulation that goes into effect on August 1st requires that health plans cover sterilization for all women with ‘reproductive capacity’.  That includes teenage girls.  According to the new regulation, women must have access to sterilization ‘without having to pay a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible.’  As I have written about previously, health officials in India are offering motorcycles, televisions and even new cars to women in an attempt to get them sterilized.”
