“In Securityspeak, ‘democracy’ doesn’t mean what it does in English. You probably think of democracy as meaningful control by ordinary people of the decisions that affect their daily lives. The false cognate Securityspeak term ‘democracy’ sounds the same, but can cause great confusion. It actually refers to a society in which the system of power is disguised by the existence of periodic electoral rituals in which the public chooses between a number of candidates, all selected from the same ruling class.”

Anthony Gregory: The FBI Lurking Behind Every Corner
“FBI operatives encouraged black radical groups to declare war on each other, tutored clueless draft protestors and right-wing paramilitary groups in the arts of burglarizing and vandalizing public buildings, established Ku Klux Klan organizations and personally assaulted Freedom Riders in premeditated beatings. In the last decade, when the FBI wasn’t preoccupied with spying on the ACLU or Quakers, it has busied itself encouraging acts of “Islamic” terrorism. A staggering number of foiled terror plots have involved entrapment reminiscent of COINTELPRO.”

John Whitehead: ‘I am not a number. I am a free man!’
“The themes of The Prisoner are still relevant today—the rise of a police state, the freedom of the individual, the perversion of science and the nature of man—and they in part account for the series’ cult following. ‘I am not a number. I am a free man,’ was the mantra chanted on each episode of The Prisoner. Perhaps the best visual debate ever on individuality and freedom, the story centers around McGoohan, a man who finds himself living in a mysterious, self-contained, cosmopolitan community known as The Village. The Village’s inhabitants are known merely by numbers, and McGoohan is Number 6.”

Homeland Security tests to begin at T stops in Cambridge, Somerville
“The federal government Wednesday will begin releasing bacteria at Red Line MBTA stations in Cambridge and Somerville at set times to test sensors designed to detect biological agents that could be released in a terrorist attack. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said in a press release Monday that the harmless bacteria is non-infectious and the tests will be performed when the stations are closed.”

Russians, Americans Take Part in Joint Air Force Counter-Terror Drill
“The U.S. may be troubled by Russian support for Syria’s Assad regime, freedom of expression violations and politically motivated prosecutions, but military-to-military cooperation continues, in line with the administration’s so-called ‘reset’ of relations with the Kremlin. For the third summer in a row, Russian Air Force personnel will join their American and Canadian counterparts in a joint counter-terror exercise beginning Monday, simulating a cooperative response to an aircraft hijacked by terrorists in international airspace.”

Taliban Behead 17 for Singing and Dancing
“The Taliban beheaded 17 people, including two women, for attending a mixed-gender party where there was music and dancing, Afghan officials reported today. All 17 bodies, including those of two women, were decapitated, but it was not clear if they had been shot first. During Taliban rule, most types of music were made illegal, and anyone caught attending a mixed-gender party faced stiff punishment. NATO officials insist that the insurgency is waning, but today’s gruesome discovery is a reminder that even after being ousted from power more than a decade ago, the Taliban are still firmly in control in some parts of the country.”

U.S. arms sales nearly triple in 2011, researchers say
“US arms transfers to other countries nearly tripled last year to $66.3 billion, giving America a market share of nearly 80 percent. The Congressional Research Service said the US figure for 2011 was the largest for a single year in the history of the arms export program. While huge, the number may be something of a one off, as it includes a huge one-off deal with Saudi Arabia to the tune of $29.4 billion. Despite a sluggish world economy, global arms sales nearly doubled in 2011 to $85.3 billion, the report said.”
