“It was revealed this month that the Pentagon had ordered staff at its top-secret missile defence unit to stop watching porn on U.S. government computers.  The recent violation at the Missile Defence Agency came to light after fears were raised that viruses may have already been smuggled into the department’s mainframe through x-rated sites. An internal probe then found that some staff had been downloading adult material on office computers and sharing them with each other via the internal network.”

Malaysian bloggers and politicians team up for ‘Internet blackout’

“Malaysian NGOs, well-known bloggers and opposition politicians staged a one-day ‘Internet blackout’ to protest a legal amendment that they say threatens free expression on the Web.  Participants replaced their home pages with black screens featuring messages attacking the new section of the Evidence Act, which went into effect in April despite widespread opposition.  Critics say under the amendment any web host, provider of a wi-fi network, or ordinary user of a computer or mobile device can be found liable for any defamatory or harmful Web content sent via its systems.”

Indian yoga guru arrested for leading thousands in pro-taxation protest

“Indian police on Monday arrested famed TV yoga guru and anti-corruption campaigner Baba Ramdev as he attempted to lead a procession of thousands of supporters to the national parliament.  Ramdev, an eccentric saffron-robed holy man with a yoga empire that spans the globe, began a protest in New Delhi last Thursday demanding the government do more to repatriate illicit money stashed by Indians in foreign accounts.” [Yes, collecting more taxes for the state will surely reduce the amount of corruption in the world.]

India monitors BlackBerry emails without encryption codes?

“RIM and the Indian government are at loggerheads over access to Blackberry’s secure corporate email service, with New Delhi fearing it could be utilised by extremists to plot attacks.  RIM has claimed it is unable to hand over codes as the system is so secure that it does not have access.  But R. Chandrashekhar, the most senior civil servant in India’s telecommunication ministry, was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as saying the government now believes it can monitor BlackBerry emails without decrypting messages. He gave no further details.”

Google accelerates launch of new music service that downgrades unlicensed music

“Google is expected to accelerate the launch of its ambitious music service outside the US after the company announced last Friday that it will downgrade illicit filesharing sites in its search results.  Websites that host unlicensed copies of songs and films will be relegated in Google search results from Monday, in what is being seen as a major olive branch to the entertainment industry.”

“Researchers from Tokyo will be presenting something called ‘PossessedHand,’ an apparatus that can actually control your hand for you. The device is strapped to the forearm and applies electrical stimuli, using them to direct the motion of your finger joints. The whole set-up comprises a micro-controller and a pair of forearm belts, which together have 28 pads (each pad specializes on a certain sense of muscles). You know when the doctor tests your reflexes by striking your knee, and you move involuntarily? Now imagine dozens of little signals like that working in concert.”
