One Honest Cop vs. the “Photo Enforcement” Racket

“Corporal Alford’s testimony is a centerpiece of a class-action lawsuit against Optotraffic, which seeks to dismiss every photo ticket issued in Riverdale Park since 2010. That racket raked in nearly $2 million last year.  One measure of the incurable corruption of that program was offered by District Judge Jean Barron, who will not permit traffic enforcement defendants to assert their innocence in his courtroom. On one occasion, Barron cited a defendant for contempt merely for insisting that he wasn’t speeding.”

Police Crackdown: Armed Self-Defense

“Tonya Beck saw a stranger climbing over the back fence of her Kansas City home early on August 4th. The night before, two men had attempted to break into her home and were chased away by her dog. Beck grabbed her .22 pistol and confronted the third invader. When the stranger lunged at Beck, she fired a shot at him, which missed but was sufficient to drive him away. Police arrived shortly thereafter. One of the officers told her that she had done the right thing. Yet the 57-year-old woman has been issued a criminal summons for discharging her weapon in self-defense.”

Fines for residences start at $25, but they zoom as high as $500 for ‘four or more Notices within a six-month period.’ You can contest your fines by hiring an attorney or waiting hours for your case to be called ‘at any ECB [Environmental Control Board] Location,’ as the ‘Notice of Violation’ advises.”

Pennsylvania tax collector sold weed outside courthouse

“Prosecutors in the Carlisle Borough, Pennsylvania said Tuesday that a 21-year-old tax collector, elected last year, was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover police officer.  George T. Hicks, a Democrat who simultaneously became the Carlisle’s first African American tax collector and the youngest tax collector in the U.S. when he was voted into office as a junior in college at just 20-years-old, insisted that he was set up by police.”  [Live by the sword, die by the sword]

Red Light Scameras Expanded In Pennsylvania

“Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett last month signed legislation expanding the use of red light cameras throughout the state. The state House waited until the dead of night to pass the measure giving more jurisdictions the ability to install automated ticketing machines, hoping to generate an estimated $49,502,545 in revenue in the first year. But while safety is cited as evidence of the benefit of camera use, the streets are not actually safer than they were without cameras. Philadelphia’s response has been to spend $120,000 on media relations to improve the image of the profitable program.”

Psychologists say not joining Facebook is ‘suspicious’

ACLU Announces Settlement in “Highway Robbery” Cases in Texas

“Police in an East Texas city will no longer enrich their coffers by seizing assets from innocent Black and Latino drivers and threatening them with baseless criminal charges, under a settlement reached today with the American Civil Liberties Union.  The ACLU settled a class-action suit, pending court approval, against officials in Tenaha and Shelby County, where it is estimated police seized $3 million between 2006 and 2008 in at least 140 cases.”
