“On Saturday, July 28, I spoke to a group of almost 150 mostly undergraduates at the Mises Institute. They had flown in from across the USA and from 20 foreign countries. It was a week-long seminar. I was the final speaker.  It is an amazing experience for an anti-Communist of my generation to speak with a Chinese student studying economics in the USA.  One young woman from Vietnam was going back to set up a Vietnamese Mises Institute. There are already three Austrian websites in Vietnam.”

“Treasury Secretary Geithner left Sunday for Germany for meetings today with senior government officials to discuss the U.S., European and global economies.  Monday afternoon, the Secretary will meet with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble in Sylt, Germany.  Later, Secretary Geithner will depart Sylt for Frankfurt, Germany.  In the evening, the Secretary will meet with European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi in Frankfurt.  Is Geithner delivering the message that it is time to take the inflation route to save the ECB and start printing?  Watch the ECB money supply, not what they say.”

Just as Happened in Europe, the VAT Is Becoming a Money Machine for Big Government in Japan

“Japan’s parliament passed a landmark tax bill Friday, finalizing the legal framework to double the nation’s sales tax by 2015 as a step toward fiscal reconstruction. The upper house enactment of the contentious bill marks the end of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s tortuous 12-month road to raise the tax to 8% in April 2014 and 10% in October 2015. …The sales tax hike will be the first since 1997, when the rate was raised to the current 5% from 3%.  Wow, more than tripling the tax between 1997 and 2015. I wonder how long it will take Japan’s political class to boost the rate to 20 percent?”

Moody’s awards metro Atlanta a ‘credit negative’ for TSPLOST failure

The defeat of the transportation sales tax vote in metro Atlanta and eight other regions of the state won’t result in an immediate downgrading of credit – but could result in one when the state or local governments go bond-shopping in the future.” [You see, when the voters reject a tax, the government has no choice but to borrow against the taxpayers’ credit anyway…]
