Google $22.5 Million FTC Fine Has No Teeth

“The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday revealed that Google has agreed to pay $22.5 million to settle charges that the company misrepresented its claim that it would not place cookie tracking files on the computers of users of Apple’s Safari browser.  The settlement is a win for Google. The ‘record-setting’ fine is less than Google’s average daily profit in 2011 (about $32 million). For a person making $50,000 annually, the settlement amount is roughly comparable to a $100 speeding ticket, before taxes.  Better still, settlement includes no admission of guilt.” [Yet another revenue shakedown]

German University to identify those killed by Communist regime fleeing to the West

“Germany launched a project on Friday to shed light on the identities of the hundreds of people killed along its internal Cold War border while trying to flee the communist East.  A new list published by the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, marking Berlin’s iconic Cold War border crossing, says the number of people who died trying to flee East Germany was 1,676.”  [What kind of idiot would want to leave the workers’ paradise anyway?]

Lebanese protest against anal exams on suspected homosexuals

“Dozens of people demonstrated outside the law courts in the Lebanese capital on Saturday to protest the use of anal ‘tests’ on dozens of men suspected of homosexuality, which is a criminal offence in the Arab country.  One sign read: ‘The cost of forensic rape: 125,000 Lebanese lira’ (about $85), pointing out that the men subjected to the anal probes were being charged for the procedure.”

Gun charge dropped after police attempt to enforce non-existent law

“At the time he was being detained, one of the five officers involved can be heard telling him, ‘Ignorance of the law is no excuse.’  ‘And yet they were all ignorant of the the law,’ said Sorensen. ‘And I was trying to tell them what the law was, and they didn’t want to listen to me.’  Sorensen said he can’t believe none of the five officers, including at least three sergeants, knew of the change.  He said he’s also concerned about a sergeant who told him, ‘You’re about to get the (expletive) kicked out of you,’ after Sorensen twice refused to put his hands up while he was being detained.”

“Wealthy French wage earners are getting ready to leave France because of the threat, from French President François Hollande, of a 75% tax on their income.  The super-wealthy Denise Rich has abandoned the United States, even though she has powerful political connections in the U.S., to escape high taxes. According to the Hurun Report, published on July 31st, more than 16% of China’s rich have already emigrated, or handed in immigration papers for another country, while 44% intend to do so soon.”

It’s backed by actual gold, which converts to whatever currency you’re needing at the time you visit an ATM.  There’s one catch if you are an American: you can’t open an account at this bank if you’re a U.S. citizen. It operates outside the jurisdiction of U.S. security regulations, and does not accept accounts from American citizens or residents.”
