Vietnam jails second dissident blogger in a week

“Le Thanh Tung was convicted of ‘propaganda against the state’ by a Hanoi court over Internet articles.  The court, which found him guilty Friday of distorting the policies of the state and the party, also handed down a subsequent sentence of four years’ house arrest. The 44-year-old had called for pluralism, multi-party democracy and constitutional amendments in the online posts, which were published between August 2009 and October 2011, the report said.”

Shock rockers Insane Clown Posse to sue FBI

“Shock rock group Insane Clown Posse said Friday that it plans to sue the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the law enforcement agency issued a report last year that labeled their fans, better known as ‘Juggalos,’ as a loosely organized criminal gang.  They later announced a lawsuit against the FBI, according to The Village Voice, and a new campaign they’re calling ‘Juggalos Fight Back,’ offering legal aid to ICP fans who feel they have been unfairly targeted in part due to their love of the clown-faced rockers.”

Facebook to have privacy policies audited for two decades under FTC deal

“Facebook will submit to external audits of how well it guards users’ data under the terms of a settlement finalized Friday with US authorities concerned about privacy abuses.  The FTC said Facebook had promised to honor users’ privacy preferences and to stop making claims about the security of personal information — such as age, location and friends — that are untrue.”  [Is this a joke?]

Saudi Arabia developing all-woman cities

“In a bid to offer more women career opportunities without running afoul of Sharia law, the Saudi Arabian government is putting together a group of all-women cities.  Construction on the first new municipality, an industrial hub slated to be part of the city of Hafuf in the eastern part of the country, is slated to begin next year, under the direction of the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon).  Officials say the new hub will focus on the textile industry and create about 5,000 jobs.” [This is the definition of a ‘liberal democracy’ — as long as you have oil and trade it in U.S. dollars.]
