Guantanamo Bay: The Model for an American Police State?

“What is the legacy of Guantanamo Bay? 171 men continue to languish there. The Bush torture program has been legitimized by the Obama administration, and indefinite detention has been codified as law. Guantanamo bleeds our coffers, costing $800,000 a year per detainee. And with a government that possesses the awesome power to indefinitely detain whomever it pleases, we are much, much less safe than we were 11 years ago.  Despite these obvious warning signs of a coming authoritarian state, a CNN poll from 2010 indicates that 60 percent of Americans would like Guantanamo to remain open.”

Voters Weigh Eased Pot Laws

“Measures to legalize marijuana are on the ballot this fall in Colorado, Oregon and Washington state—and recent polls suggest at least a couple of the campaigns have realistic chances of success.  All three measures would legalize possession of small quantities of the drug for anyone above age 21 and allow taxable retail sales, going well beyond laws in 17 states that permit marijuana use for medical purposes. The proposed state laws are in direct conflict with federal law, which continues to outlaw marijuana, even though possession of small quantities is rarely prosecuted on a federal level.”

Airport security accidentally fires flight attendant’s gun at Philadelphia airport

“The unidentified Republic Airlines attendant had forgotten her gun was inside her bag when she went through a security checkpoint.  Authorities say she had a legal permit for the gun. She was taken into custody and received a summary citation for disorderly conduct before being released.  The gun fired one round while an officer was trying to take the bullets out, but no one was injured. Internal Affairs is investigating the incident, while the officer, also unidentified, will receive weapons-handling training.”

Federal Guilty Pleas Soar As Bargains Trump Trials

“The triumph of plea bargaining in the federal system, which has gathered pace in recent years, is nearly complete. Guilty pleas last year resolved 97% of all federal cases that the Justice Department prosecuted to a conclusion. That is up from 84% in 1990. During that period, the number of federal defendants nearly doubled amid a crackdown on crimes ranging from drug trafficking to fraud, while the number going to trial fell by nearly two-thirds.  Behind the dominance of the plea bargain is the rapid growth in the number of federal criminal laws and the stiffening of sentences.”

Florida: Court Approves Detaining Motorists at Toll Booth

“Under FDOT policies in place at the time, motorists who paid with $50 bills, and occasionally even $5 bills, were not given permission to proceed until the toll collector filled out a ‘Bill Detection Report’ with data about the motorist’s vehicle and details from his driver’s license. Many of those who chose to pay cash did so to avoid the privacy implications of installing a SunPass transponder that recorded their driving habits.”

Sovietizing the Homeland Security State

“Russia’s Speech Technology Center has provided the Department of Homeland Security with a surveillance system called ‘Voice Grid Nation’ that will allow law enforcement agencies to compile a huge, searchable database of the voices intercepted through electronic surveillance.  The system will be installed at all 911 call centers, which means that anytime you call the police for help, they’ll add your voice to the Russian-designed database.”

NYPD Taru Zuccotti Raid Footage

“On November 15, 2011, the NYPD surrounded the Zuccotti Park and poceeded to forcefully dismantle the Occupy Wall Street encampment. As part of this effort, the authorities made all media leave the scene and the only images of what happened came from one live streamer who stayed in the center of the park until his arrest, and one other citizen journalist who kept filming on his camera and managed to somehow smuggle the footage out of the arrest zone.”
