U.S. Economic Freedom Plunges

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/162078_44357672795_1426472938_q.jpg

“The United States is rapidly losing its status as one of the freest economies in the world. Economic freedom has decreased in the United States substantially since 2000 and lately its ranking among countries is plunging downward even faster. This spells trouble since economic freedom promotes growth and a higher standard of living.  Today it ranks behind European welfare states like Finland and Denmark, and places traditionally more hostile to economic freedom like Qatar.  The declines in freedom have occurred because the federal government has grown larger and more intrusive. It has been a non-partisan affair.”

Apple Copied 68-Year-Old Swiss Clock Design, Rail Operator Says

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/600px-BahnhofsuhrZuerich_RZ1.jpg

“Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s new iPhone operating system infringes a trademarked design for clocks in Swiss rail stations, according to state-owned railway operator SBB.  The iOS 6 software, introduced this month by Apple, includes a clock icon with black and red hands that uses an SBB design created in 1944, Reto Kormann, a spokesman for the Swiss rail operator, said by telephone today.  SBB, which has allowed companies such as watchmaker Mondaine Watch Ltd. to use the design under a license, said that it’s in discussions with Cupertino, California-based Apple about a license or a settlement.”

Copyright Becomes a Parody of Itself: Art History Textbook Contains No Actual Art

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/textbook-example1-e1348087155509-460x307.png

“The screengrabs are pretty hilarious, or depressing, depending on your point of view.  This is even more absurd and outrageous—I think—than the Authors Guild lawsuit to to stop universities from providing access to orphaned works, in the name of ‘copyright’ belonging to some unknown owners.”

Washington Selectively Rolling Back Dodd-Frank

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/20120920-sewer-600x-13481519521.jpg

“Wall Street lobbyists are awesome. They always go right to the edge of outrageous, and then wittily take one baby-step beyond it. And they did so again last night, with the passage of a new House bill (HR 2827), which rolls back a portion of Dodd-Frank designed to protect cities and towns from the next Jefferson County disaster.  The Dodd-Frank Act among other things included a simple reform. It required the financial advisors of municipalities to do two things: register with the SEC, and accept a fiduciary duty to respect the best interests of the taxpayers they are advising. Sounds simple, right? But Wall Street couldn’t have that.”

Why ‘Government’ and ‘Competent’ Are Antonyms

“The newly hired director for Massport, the bureaucracy that runs Boston’s Logan Airport, frankly admits, ‘I’m obviously not an expert in aviation…‘ So why did Massport’s board choose him? There are probably many reasons, including favors owed and personal ties, but the one for public consumption is ‘He’s a guy that cares about public service.’  Imagine a supermarket, bowling alley, or doctor’s office hiring someone to run the place who knows nothing of groceries, bowling, or medicine. But hey, the ignoramus has a tremendous track record otherwise.”

City may sue developer who spent $20,000 to remove 40 tons of trash from vacant lot

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/ALot1.jpg

“Not only did the agency fail to act but it also denied Feibush’s offer to clean up the mess himself.  But Feibush went ahead with his plans anyway, reportedly spending more than $20,000 of his own money not only to remove the trash but also to level the soil; add cherry trees, fencing and park benches; and repave the sidewalk.  However, the city agency was less excited, demanding that Feibush return the vacant lot to its previous condition and saying it is considering legal action against him.”

The Dwindling Value of a College Education

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/coll-earnings1-e13481532963431.jpg

“Real earnings for young college grads have fallen by over 15% since 2000, or by about $10,000 in 2011 dollars. That is if they have a job in the first place. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates continues significantly higher than for the population as a whole.  There are a few things going on here.”

“Active Shooter” training session, featuring DHS, FEMA, concerns TCC students

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/federalpolicevehicle.png

“Earlier this week, students at Tulsa Community College’s downtown campus were surprised to see dozens of vehicles from various law enforcement agencies – local, state and federal – parked in lots at the school, and little explanation about their presence by school administrators.  Tulsa Police Department, Department of Homeland Security and FEMA officers, among others, were gathered at a building at the downtown campus of Tulsa Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 18, taking parking spaces from fee-paying students who were then forced to park at meters in the vicinity of 10th and Boston streets.”

Is the “Ron Paul Revolution” Too Dangerous for Auburn?

“The odds that Ron Paul would win the Republican Presidential primary this year were always pretty slim. But you wouldn’t know that from the overheated response one student supporter at Auburn University in Alabama got when he dared to place a sign supporting Paul’s candidacy in his dorm room window last fall. Perhaps fearing that a wave of Ron Paul mania would sweep uncontrollably over Auburn, the sign was only up for three hours before officials demanded that student Eric Philips remove the poster from his window, ostensibly for safety reasons.”

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Jay_Rockefeller_official_photo-via-Wikimedia-615x345.jpg

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D) of West Virginia took the unusual step Wednesday of writing the CEOs of the 500 largest UScompanies to request their views on cybersecurity and the legislation aimed at protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure from computer attacks.  Senator Rockefeller wrote a day after two other Senate Democrats, Chris Coons of Delaware and Richard Blumenthalof Connecticut, wrote a joint letter to President Obama calling on him to issue an executive order aimed at protecting critical infrastructure from cyberattack. Rockefeller and Sen. Diane Feinstein (D) of California also have called for presidential action.”
