Oakland, California Raises Then Shortens Yellows for Revenue

“Redflex Traffic Systems, an Australian company, began issuing automated citations on Oakland streets in 2008. The city has been so focused on revenue that the police department officials who manage the contract with Redflex became irate when the transportation staff decided to add one second to the duration of yellow signal timing at the photo enforced intersections.  The total number of violations immediately went down 56 percent with the longer yellows. This infuriated Oakland Police Lieutenant Anthony Banks Sr, who was in charge of managing the program vendor.”

Boy Claims Cop Sexually Abused Him for Months

“A Caldwell police officer abused his position as a high school resource officer to sexually abuse a boy for months, the student claims in Federal Court.  Plaintiff B.N. claims his abuser, Ruben Delgadillo, was convicted in 2011 of felony injury to a child – the plaintiff.  B.N. also sued Caldwell police Officer Mike Larimer, who he claims was Delgadillo’s roommate during the months of sexual abuse, and knew it was happening but failed to stop it.”

Former Pittsburgh schools police officer faces sex charges

“A Pittsburgh Public Schools police officer has been charged with nearly two dozen counts of sex crimes stemming from a Pittsburgh police investigation into former students’ accusations that he sexually assaulted them.  He is being questioned at Pittsburgh police headquarters and will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail to face 23 counts of crimes including corruption of minors, child endangerment and sex crimes.”

BPD officer sentenced in drug case

“A Baltimore City Police officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors say 41-year-old Daniel Redd worked to traffic heroin.  Officials say Redd wore his uniform and provided protection for a dealer meeting with a heroin customer. They say he was also the source of the heroin.”

Police Raid Wrong House, Kill 61-Year Old Man

“A 61-year-old man was shot to death by police while his wife was handcuffed in another room during a drug raid on the wrong house. Police admitted their mistake, saying faulty information from a drug informant contributed to the death of John Adams Wednesday night. They intended to raid the home next door.  One official claimed that they did ‘the best surveillance we could do.'”

Swiss agree on 100-franc fines for pot smokers

“Switzerland’s parliament ruled on Thursday to fine adult cannabis users 100 francs ($107) if caught with small quantities of the drug.  Switzerland’s largest party, the right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party, said it would not push for a referendum on the issue despite consistently arguing for higher fines for pot smokers, newspaper 20 Minuten reports.  Thursday’s vote marks the end of a protracted disagreement between the two houses of parliament.”

Jury Nullifies Felony in Cannabis Grower’s Trial

“An NH jury has acquitted a man facing a felony for growing cannabis! It’s our first real-life case of jury nullification here in NH and the jury nullification law hasn’t even gone into effect yet. Kudos to the judge for reading a fair and easy-to-understand jury instruction about nullifying as an option! Also, it probably helped that a free stater was on the jury!  If you are an self-described anarchist or agorist and you are not registered to vote, you need to remedy that now. Being on the voter’s rolls means you could be chosen as a juror.”

Marijuana Compound Fights Cancer; Human Trials Next

“Turns out a component of cannabis fights cancer, according to research.  Scientists at California Pacific Medical Center found that cannabidiol, or CBD, has the ability to ‘turn off’ the DNA that causes ‘breast and other types of cancers’ to metastasize, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.  ‘If this plant were discovered in the Amazon today, scientists would be falling all over each other to be the first to bring it to market,’ said Dr. Donald Abrams, chief of oncology at the University of California San Francisco, which has also found science behind marijuana’s efficacy.”

Minnesota farmer cleared by jury in raw milk case

“A soft-spoken Minnesota farmer was cleared of violating state laws for distributing raw milk Thursday, a verdict advocates for such foods called their first major legal victory. After a three-day trial and more than four hours of deliberation, a Hennepin County jury found Alvin Schlangen not guilty of three misdemeanor counts of selling unpasteurized milk, operating without a food license and handling adulterated or misbranded food.”
