“The rich got quite a bit richer this past year, according to this year’s rankings of the 400 wealthiest Americans.  Forbes magazine released its annual list on Wednesday, and the combined net worth jumped 13% to $1.7 trillion in 2012, up from $1.5 trillion in 2011. The boost came thanks to the rising stock market and a rebound in real estate values – especially in cities like Los Angeles and New York.”

Bank of Japan announces new monetary easing

“The Bank of Japan announced Wednesday that it would expand its asset purchase program by 10 trillion yen in an effort to stimulate its economy as global demand slows.  The announcement comes less than a week after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced its latest stimulus plan, and two weeks after the European Central Bank revealed its new bond-buying program.  The purchases — which include T-bills and government bonds — will be completed by the end of 2013. The vote to ease monetary policy was unanimous, the bank noted.”

Deposit Flight From Europe Banks Eroding Common Currency

“A total of 326 billion euros ($425 billion) was pulled from banks in Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Greece in the 12 months ended July 31, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The plight of Irish and Greek lenders, which were bleeding cash in 2010, spread to Spain and Portugal last year.  The ECB has taken the place of depositors and other creditors who have pulled money out over the past two years, largely through its longer-term refinancing operation, known as LTRO. The Frankfurt-based central bank was providing 820 billion euros to lenders in the five countries at the end of July.”

Homeland Security Purchases 200 Million More Rounds of Ammunition

North Carolina sheriff’s office targeted Latinos

“A North Carolina sheriff’s department systematically targeted Hispanics for traffic checks and other infringements, the US Justice Department ruled Tuesday after a two-year investigation.  The sheriff’s office would ‘explicitly instruct deputies to target Latinos with discriminatory traffic stops and other enforcement activities,’ said the justice department probe.  Once Hispanics are stopped in the eastern US state they face discriminatory checks on their migration status.”

Police Allegedly Fire 41 Shots At Unarmed Man

“A Garland police officer is on restricted duty after authorities say he fired as many as 41 shots at an apparently unarmed man last month, killing him. Garland police also said Tuesday that dash-cam video revealed that Officer Patrick Tuter crashed his squad car into a truck driven by the suspect, Michael Vincent Allen, before the shooting started. Initial reports had said Allen had hit Tuter’s car, prompting the officer to open fire. A witness took cellphone pictures and video after the shooting stopped, but he said Mesquite police confiscated the phone and deleted the video and pictures.”

Texas Police Chief Approves of Officer Dragging Elderly Woman Out of Car on Camera

“A Texas police officer was not deterred in dragging an elderly woman out of her car when she did not immediately produce a driver’s license during a traffic stop.  It took less than a minute for Keene Police Sgt. Gene Geheb to drag 77-year-old Lynn Bedford out of her car, even though she said she would give him her license.  She just didn’t do it fast enough.  Geheb had pulled her over last month after clocking her driving 66 mph in a 50 mph zone.  Bedford, who was driving home after playing piano at church, explained that she was in a hurry because she had a bladder infection and needed to use the bathroom.”
