“A total of 825 cameras were located in the toilets or changing rooms of 207 schools across England, Scotland and Wales, according to data provided by more than 2,000 schools.  Responses from 2,107 secondary schools and academies showed they used 47,806 cameras overall, including 26,887 inside school buildings.  With 1.8m pupils being taught in these schools, there was an average of one camera for every 38 children.”

New cameras to watch cameras that watch you

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/2609911.jpg

“Many people find speed cameras frustrating, and some in the region are taking their rage out on the cameras themselves.  But now there’s a new solution: cameras to watch the cameras. One is already in place, and Prince George’s County Police Maj. Robert V. Liberati hopes to have up to a dozen more before the end of the year.  Liberati is the Commander of the Automated Enforcement Section, which covers speed and red-light cameras.  Since April, six people have damaged speed cameras.”

Government Studies the Studies (You Can’t Make This Up)

“In 2010, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Pentagon was spending too much on studies, so he commissioned a study of exactly how much. That study was then scrutinized by the Government Accountability Office, which found the study of studies lacking.  Here’s the kicker. What does the study of the study of studies conclude? More study is needed. The GAO recommends that the Pentagon ‘take steps to evaluate DOD’s effort to estimate costs.'”

As Low Rates Depress Savers, Governments Reap Benefits

“Though bad for people trying to live off their savings, low interest rates happen to be quite good for anyone borrowing money, like governments themselves.  Along with keeping rates low, governments are using a variety of tactics to encourage captive audiences, like pension funds and banks, to buy their debt. Consumers, in other words, are subtly subsidizing governments without even knowing it. Economists have compared this phenomenon to a hidden tax on people’s wealth.”

Study: Level of military substance abuse now a ‘public health crisis,’ Pentagon care outdated

“About 20 percent of active-duty service members reported they engaged in heavy drinking in 2008, the latest year for which data was available.  Binge drinking increased from 35 percent in 1998 to 47 percent in 2008.  While rates of both illicit and prescription drug abuse are low, the rate of medication misuse is rising. Just 2 percent of active-duty personnel reported misusing prescription drugs in 2002 compared with 11 percent in 2008.”

The United States Plummets to 18th in New Economic Freedom of the World Rankings

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/efw-score-2012-2010.jpg

“Last year, the U.S. fell from 7th to 10th, and I though dropping three spots was bad. But falling by eight spots this past year is a stunning decline.  Who would have thought that Scandinavian welfare states such as Denmark and Finland would rank higher than the United States? Or that Ireland, with all its problems, would be above America?  I’ve previously highlighted the good policies in Hong Kong and Singapore. And I’ve trumpeted the good policies in Switzerland and Australia, as well as Canada, Chile, and Estonia. So kudos to the leaders in those nations.  American politicians, by contrast, deserve scorn.”

U.S. suspends joint military operations with Afghanistan after insider attacks

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Coalition-forces-in-Afghanistan-via-AFP1.jpg

“American commanders said that joint operations on the ground will be suspended ‘until further notice’ in a dramatic admission that the strategy to shift responsibility for fighting the insurgents to local forces has been deeply compromised by Afghan government soldiers and policemen killing 51 Nato soldiers in 36 attacks this year. At least 12 attacks were carried out last month alone, leaving 15 dead.  The admission that Nato troops are no longer safe from the forces they are relying on to keep the Taliban at bay after the final US pullout in 2014 is a severe blow to Washington’s military plans.”

Dead Gitmo detainee was cleared for release in 2009

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/120911-guantanamo-detainee-latif-kb-1206p.38038077001.jpg

“The disclosure that the detainee, Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif, a 32-year-old Yemeni citizen, had been approved for repatriation could raise new questions about the handling of his case and those of scores of others held in Gitmo who also have been cleared for release. Instead, the detainees remain stuck in legal limbo in the U.S. prison for suspected terrorists with no prospect for getting out any time soon.”

Glenn Greenwald: Obama’s justice department grants final immunity to Bush’s CIA torturers

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/anti-torture-protest-0061.jpg

“The Obama administration‘s aggressive, full-scale whitewashing of the ‘war on terror’ crimes committed by Bush officials is now complete. Thursday, Attorney General Eric Holder announced the closing without charges of the only two cases under investigation relating to the US torture program: one that resulted in the 2002 death of an Afghan detainee at a secret CIA prison near Kabul, and the other the 2003 death of an Iraqi citizen while in CIA custody at Abu Ghraib.”
