“Ron Paul has long warned Americans of the dangers of a federal government-supported police state, and now, it seems his worst fears are coming to life. A 16-year-old Ron Paul supporter has been questioned by the FBI after he created a YouTube video for a school project which highlights how America is slipping into a police state. That’s right, a child has been questioned by the authorities solely because of his support for libertarian Ron Paul. Let alone that the video earned Justin Hallman an A+ with his teacher in his American Government class.”

Texas teacher assigns 4th graders to draw suicides, explosions on 9/11

“Parents in El Paso, Texas say they were shocked to find out that a teacher at Hughey Elementary asked their children to depict airplanes flying into buildings, explosions and people jumping to their deaths to remember the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. El Paso Independent School District confirmed to KFOX that students were asked to draw pictures of 9/11 after a class discussion about the tragedy.”

N.J. politician pushes for law requiring pets buckle up on car rides

“If a lawmaker has her way, those carefree rides in cars with their heads out the window will be long gone. Instead, dogs — and cats — will have to be buckled up for safety, just like humans. No states have laws requiring animals be restrained inside a car, although a bill was introduced in Tennessee last year requiring it for animals in the front seat, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Cathleen Lewis, spokeswoman for AAA of New Jersey, said eight states — not including New Jersey — have laws requiring animals be restrained when in the beds of pick-up trucks.”

NYC health board bans super-sized, sugary drinks

“As expected, Bloomberg’s proposal passed easily — by an 8-0 vote, with one abstention. The mayor said via Twitter that this plan ‘is the single biggest step any’ government has taken to attack obesity. The new regulation — which goes into effect in March — puts a 16-ounce limit on non-diet soda and sweetened teas ‘in fast-food joints, movie houses and Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias and most other places selling prepared food.’ The mayor is set to announce a deal, later today, with managers of the new Barclays Center, who will adhere to the big-drink ban immediately, months ahead of the March enforcement.”

Pa. Man Barters With Bacon for Cross-Country Trip

“Josh Sankey has been issued a challenge: to make his way from New York City to Los Angeles with nothing but a smile and a refrigerated trailer filled with 3,000 pounds of bacon. That means no cash and no credit cards. The uncooked bacon is the only currency the actor and comedian has for gas, lodging, food and everything else he’ll need along the way. It’s not just the bare necessities either. Sankey’s managing to enjoy the sites along the way. ‘I got two tickets to the Jets game for six bricks [of bacon],’ he said. ‘They were pretty good seats, too.'”

Obama administration renews calls that China currency is undervalued
[Could the timing be any more cynical?] “US President Barack Obama’s ambassador to China renewed calls Thursday for Beijing to let its currency appreciate further after Republican challenger Mitt Romney pressed for a harder line. The yuan, also known as the renminbi, has appreciated more than five percent against the dollar in the past two years as China contends with inflationary pressure. The yuan has risen some 30 percent since 2005 when China loosened its grip on it.”
US Housing – Surprising Numbers

“Of all the major markets surveyed, Hong Kong came out as the least affordable at 12.6. Vancouver, Canada, was the second most unaffordable with a median multiple of 10.6 All the markets of Australian and New Zealand were severely unaffordable — which perhaps leads you to the next bursting housing bubbles. The US, by contrast, dominates the affordability rankings with several cities below 2 and most in the range of 2-3. US housing is a buy. It is a cheap asset. Look to buy a house and rent it. By the time the mainstream gets onto the idea, the bottom will be years behind us.”
Fitch: rising delinquency rates pose looming threat for FHA
“Worsening delinquency trends for home loans insured by the U.S. Federal Housing Administration (FHA), evident on large banks’ balance sheets in the second quarter, may point to more trouble ahead for the FHA as the agency seeks to shore up its loss reserves. This may eventually force the FHA to look for opportunities to put back some defaulted loans to the banks, particularly if the agency’s funding status worsens and U.S. home prices fail to rebound quickly.”

The Federal Reserve’s Cargo Cult Magic: Housing Will Lift the Economy (Again)

“Lower rates were supposed to spark a re-financing boom that would free up billions of dollars as monthly mortgage payments dropped, but oops, very few homeowners are creditworthy now that having a pulse and the ability to lie are no longer sufficient to get a mortgage. The Fed can funnel trillions to banks, but it can’t force them to lend money to uncreditworthy borrowers putting up phantom collateral. So the Fed is back to the game of goosing phantom assets higher with perception management.”
