U.S. Household Income Sinks to ’95 Level

“The income of the typical U.S. family has fallen to levels last seen in 1995, a long and pernicious slide that likely means it will be a generation before Americans regain the peak income levels reached at the close of the ’90s.  A report from the Census Bureau Wednesday said annual household income fell in 2011 for the fourth straight year to an inflation-adjusted $50,054. Median annual household income—the figure at which half are above and half below—now stands 8.9% below its all-time peak of $54,932 in 1999, at the end of the 1990s economic expansion.”

WTC memorial magnificent, but at a steep price

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/36dc33f8756dad191a0f6a706700cf181.jpg

“The foundation that runs the memorial estimates that once the roughly $700 million project is complete, the memorial and museum will together cost $60 million a year to operate.  The anticipated cost has bothered some critics and raised concerns even among the memorial’s allies that the budget may be unsustainable without a hefty government subsidy.  The foundation plans to spend at least a fifth of its operating budget, or around $12 million per year, on private security because of terrorism fears. Visitors to the memorial plaza pass through airport-like security, and armed guards patrol the grounds.”

Reflections on 9/11 and the High Cost of Waging War in the Middle East

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/dont_bomb_talk_dsz1.jpe

“Are we ready to start another war?  For the last eleven years, we have waged war in the Middle East with no gain, and have continued to lose lives as well as credibility, integrity, personal liberty, and our credit rating. Now, we have two Presidential candidates that want to begin another war that we can’t afford, on many levels. Is it still about protecting us from terrorism? Or have we hearkened back to Carter’s philosophy of protecting our oil interests?”

A Curious Photo from the Egyptian Riot Front

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/r620-d477aeabc8a5750dad44f8ceadf033c81.jpg

“Egyptian protesters wearing Guy Fawkes masks pose for a photo during a protest in Cairo, Egypt.  Rioters climbed the walls of the U.S. embassy in Cairo and tore up the American Flag, replacing it with a black al Qaeda flag.  But, Travis Holte writes: ‘Not sure what to make of this, but one commenter points out that two of those in the photo are wearing press passes.'”

DHS Warns Muslim Brotherhood and Iran Forming New “Terror Axis”

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/obamahillary-9-12-121.png

“Which is it? Is Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood the ally that Obama’s White House opened formal contracts with earlier this year, giving over $1 billion in military aid to? Or is it the group which called for protests in Egypt and Libya ending in the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, and according to DHS, is currently working to promote global terror with Iran?  As our offensive empire building continues across the Middle East, the White House is having a harder and harder time keeping its stories straight on who we support and why.”

Should the Government Track Your Political Activity?

“Professor Brad Smith asks you to imagine the following scenario: at the height of the War on Terror, the government passes a second PATRIOT Act. This law would require you to report all your political activity to the government, including the campaigns you support. In addition, the government would then make a list of your political activity available to anyone — potential employers, creditors, and even your neighbors. Does this sound like an invasion of your privacy?  According to Professor Brad Smith, we already have a law that does exactly this. It’s the Federal Elections Campaign Act of 1974 (FECA).”

Paul Craig Roberts: The Republicans Cross The Rubicon

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/withkitties_150_1202.jpg

“How can the American people trust the Republicans with the awesome power of the executive branch when the Republican Party just finished demonstrating for all to see its Stalinist qualities by crushing the anti-war, anti-police state wing of its party?  Are Americans aware that the hubris and idiocy of their political leaders have now saddled Americans with the burden of two number one enemies, both well equipped with armies and nuclear weapons? Only Iran can be happy about this as it moves Iran off the front burner.”

Iraq’s exiled vice president sentenced to death as violence grows

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/0909_World_IraqVP_full_380.jpg

“Mr. Hashemi, the country’s most senior Sunni Arab official, was targeted for prosecution within a week of the US military‘s departure from Iraq last December. Since, he’s been on the lam, telling anyone who will listen that Maliki, a Shiite community leader, is amassing dictatorial powers for himself and creating the conditions for a renewed sectarian civil war in the country. In an interview weeks before today’s verdict, the one-time staunch critic of the US occupation said he was looking to the US for assistance, and that unbridled sectarianism was threatening the country’s tenuous stability.”
