The historic State of the Union address by US president George W. Bush on September 20, 2001 is loaded with morals and principles about good and evil. Syrian citizens who prefer the secular and stable state to the prospect of an Iraqi-style sectarian state may well be turning this same question around to the US government: are you with us, or with the terrorists?”

Distrust of Americans spreads beyond Middle East

“American influence on the world stage is being sapped by widespread distrust of US intentions, not just in the Middle East and south Asia but also among traditional European allies, according to a survey of global opinions. Suspicion of America outweighed faith in its good intentions by large margins in the Arab world and Pakistan, and even its heavyweight European ally Germany was more sceptical than trusting, a YouGov survey found. British and French opinion was more positive but still deeply divided.”

Egyptian protesters tore down U.S. embassy flag

“Nearly 3,000 demonstrators, most of them hardline Islamist supporters of the Salafist movement or football fans, gathered at the embassy in protest over a film deemed offensive to the Prophet Mohammed which was produced by expatriate members of Egypt’s Christian minority resident in the United States. A dozen men scaled over the embassy walls and one of them tore down the Stars and Stripes, replacing it with a black flag inscribed with the Muslim profession of faith: ‘There is no God but God and Mohammed is the prophet of God.'”

U.S. nears deal to cut Egypt’s debt by $1 billion

[When can U.S. taxpayers expect the same forgiveness — or will they be the ones to make up the difference instead?] “The United States is weighing a deal with Egypt’s new rulers to relieve $1 billion worth of debt, The New York Times reported. U.S. President Barack Obama first promised the aid in May 2011, along with another $1 billion destined to assist Egypt’s democratic transition after the fall of longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.”

UN: New generation of secret British courts could conceal torture collusion

“The new generation of secret courts proposed by the government could suppress evidence of British collusion in torture, according to the chief UN official responsible for investigating wrongdoing by security and intelligence agencies. Ministers maintain that the new secret courts are needed to protect its intelligence-sharing relationship with the US and other governments, while critics say they are intended to conceal evidence of crimescommitted by the British government, including involvement in the rendition and torture of British citizens suspected of being terrorists.”

11 Years After 9/11, It’s Time to End the War on Terror

“Although U.S. officials have acknowledged that the al Qaeda that attacked us on 9/11 has been all but defeated, the government has ramped up the war against far-flung al Qaeda affiliates, some of which didn’t even exist in 2001. Now, the U.S. military, with not-so-secret help from the CIA, is fighting not only in Afghanistan but in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and other parts of Northern Africa. Only we don’t know exactly whom they’re fighting, where or why, because the government says that’s classified.”
