“Indian police Monday questioned a cartoonist on charges of sedition over a series of cartoons which lampooned the government’s corruption record, including one that depicted parliament as a giant toilet bowl. The arrest of Aseem Trivedi, a freelance artist, triggered widespread condemnation from media and anti-graft activists who said it was evidence of a lack of respect for freedom of expression.”

U.S. ‘withheld’ emails on WikiLeaks suspect Bradley Manning: defense

“The defense team for Private Bradley Manning, who could be jailed for life for ‘aiding the enemy’ over the WikiLeaks incident, said top officers had put their concerns about negative publicity ahead of their client’s fair treatment. Manning’s civilian lawyer David Coombs told a pre-trial hearing that 84 emails were released to the defense team in July last year, before it emerged that 1,290 other messages had not been passed on to him.”

It was common knowledge that the Soviets had murdered 22,000 of Poland’s military and civilian leadership in 1940, but beginning with FDR and continuing through the administration of George H.W. Bush, the ‘official’ line was agnosticism, while the U.S. Government gave us the ‘Operation Keelhaul‘ massacres that forever are a stain to this country.”

S. Korea, U.S. practice occupying N. Korea

“South Korean troops practiced a war scenario involving the occupation and stabilization of North Korea during a joint military drill with the United States last month, a report said Tuesday. The two allies, who staged a similar stabilization exercise in 2010, upgraded it to strengthen the role of the South Korean army in the event of an ’emergency situation in the North.’ It cited an unnamed senior government official, who said the maneuver — called Wind of Freedom — involved humanitarian assistance for North Koreans after occupying the communist state and restoring administrative services.”

U.S. ‘troubled’ as Bahrain upholds activists’ sentences

“The United States said Tuesday it was ‘deeply troubled’ after a Bahrain appeals court upheld jail terms against 13 leading activists over charges of plotting to overthrow the Gulf monarchy. The US urged Bahrain ‘to abide by its commitment to respect detainees’ right to due process and to transparent judicial proceedings, including fair trials and access to attorneys. It is important that verdicts are based on credible evidence and that judicial proceedings are conducted in full accordance with Bahraini law and Bahrain’s international legal obligations,’ State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.

Texas Man Sues Over Red Light Camera Protest Sign

“Two years ago, Baytown, Texas officials threatened to fine local resident Byron Schirmbeck for the crime of standing on the sidewalk with a sign, peacefully protesting the use of red light cameras. Now Schirmbeck is fighting back with a civil rights lawsuit he filed last week in the US District Court for the Southern Division of Texas.”

37 people arrested protesting drones (2011)

“Dozens of war protesters were arrested Friday afternoon outside the main entrance of the New York Air National Guard’s base at Hancock Field. They were handcuffed and, after a 45-minute wait, were led to a jail transport bus that was supposed to take them to the Onondaga County Justice Center for processing. Two were in wheel chairs. The arrests followed a rally outside the air base where more than 150 people had gathered to protest the MQ-9 Reaper drones, and U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. The unmanned surveillance aircraft is armed with Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bombs.”

Libyans tell of Torture, Rendition by US

“The 154-page report, ‘Delivered into Enemy Hands: US-Led Abuse and Rendition of Opponents to Gaddafi’s Libya,’ is based on interviews conducted in Libya with 14 former detainees, most of whom belonged to an armed Islamist group that had worked to overthrow Gaddafi for 20 years. Many members of the group, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), joined the NATO-backed anti-Gaddafi rebels in the 2011 conflict. Some of those who were rendered and allegedly tortured in US custody now hold key leadership and political positions in the country.”

Report on CIA Torture Methods and Renditions

“This is a new report of the CIA’s torture, prisons, treatment of persons seized, and renditions to other countries. It’s based on interviews and contains interview material of about 14 Libyans who were kidnapped. They were held incommunicado for long periods, tortured, and shipped back to Libya against all canons of justice. After Gaddafi’s overthrow, some of these men who had not earlier died or been killed or committed suicide came out of Gaddafi’s prisons, so that they could relate what had been done to them. I may have some of the details wrong, but that’s roughly the story.”
